  • 'Pole position' - battery buying

Just looked through some threads about battery spec. One discussion states the batteries needed in a dual battery setup. They appear identical except that the driver side battery has 'Pole position = 1' and the passenger side has 'pole position = 0'.

What does this mean? Do I need to buy a different battery configuration depending on which side needs replacing?

Varta website produces the following in a search:

Manufacturer TOYOTA Model Line 4 RUNNER (_N130)
    Vehicle 2.4 (RN61) kW / PS 82 / 112
    From 1987-08 To 1996-03

    Article number 570 138 057 2082
    Product line ASIA dynamic
    Voltage [V] 12
    Battery Capacity [Ah] 70
    Cold-test Current, EN [A] 570
    Length [mm] 261
    Width [mm] 175
    Height [mm] 220
    Hold-down Type B01
    Pole Positions 1
    Terminal Type 1

    Any thoughts anyone?

Yup, the batteries are 'handed'. Each one has the -ve pole towards the outer edge of the car, and the +ve pole towards the inner edge.

Also, worth replacing the batteries in pairs if possible, an old battery will quickly take down a new battery.

see how much length you have on the cable... it might reach if you just get 2 the same.
or, turn one round so the terminals are the right way round.

I've got a 2.4 with a starter battery (O/S), a leisure battery (N/S) and split charge system. The starter is getting weak and needs replacing but I wanted as powerful as possible as the lights, rear window etc all still run off the starter, the leisure is mostly for accessories (Fridge etc).
I've done a lot of searching for a new battery and have found these. I have measured alot and am confident it will fit, looked at Optima Red tops as well with 815cca but only 50Ah which isn't as much as I wanted. The numax one was the most powerful I could find that fits with 750cca and 88Ah

if you're only using it for starting, you'll not need a high Ah rating...
higher CCa is best for starting,
