THIS CHROME TANK HAS A PIPE GOING TO THE TOP OF THE ROCKER COVER AND ONE GOING ONTO THE AIR INDUCTION PIPE>>> DON’T KNOW WHAT ITS FOR!
    can it be disconnected?
    would it need to be?

    thank you in advance

It looks like an oil catch tank. If it is, it's designed to collect oil expelled under crankcase pressure. The sight gauge on the side is to show the level of oil & when to empty the tank.

is that a good thing or a bad thing?

it's on the car i'm looking to buy.

is it needed as i've never seen anything like it before.

if it goes wrong what then?

      should alarm bells be ringing?

Can't be a bad thing, some of the Guys/Gals (PC) on the Forum are thinking of fitting em or have even fitted them !!!!!
At least it'll give ya an indication to ya Truck's heavy Breathing or Not by the amount of oil contained in a given period.... it would only be vapour in the atmosphere or on the roads anyways !!!! (Sweeping up after yerself eh) in a manner of speaking..............

There's always a Payback.... You just can't see em Comin !!!!

It's not that unusual. I've seen people attach oil catch tanks for various reasons. In fact, I have one fitted to the Ford crossflow in my Lotus 7 style kit car. I've used it because I've removed the original crankcase breather because it's considered to be restrictive (to the engine breathing). Most engines need some means of relieving the pressure that builds up as a result of running. Normally, this can take the form of a return pipe that goes from somewhere (quite often the rocker/cam cover) and is fed back into the inlet manifold were the oil laden fumes are consumed in combustion. An oil catch tank is a means of doing the same thing, only it catches the oil in the vapour & returns to either the air or, in your case, wherever the pipe marked 'out' goes to. Nothing wrong with it, provided it's properly plumbed in & you remember to empty it every now & then.

It 'catches' the hot oil vapour which would normally be going back into the intake side of the turbo, which isn't nice for the turbo and reduces the smoke out the exhaust too.

that's good, so i take there's not much can go wrong with it.

as you've guessed i'm not most mechanically minded fella in the world.

which is suprising since i owned a range rover for 5years! , i just want something reliable, good to drive etc and from what i've read the surf is definately it - so after finding the one i want. i dont want to not buy it for something silly.

i take it this can be emptied as part of a full service?

Walk away unless its really cheap, anything that needs a catch can is one step away from needing a engine rebuild.

Its a sign of worn rings, valve seals (the easiest option) or bores, its could last years but just as easily go over the edge in weeks.

                  dont say that!

if the engine was worn would'nt it blow smoke anyway?

if the thing was put on to cover this up why make it in chrome and put it where you can see it?

it is definately a "catch can"?

it's just passed new mot emissions and blow no smoke when you start it up from cold or when hot.

                  confused now

tony do you have a contact number?

This is not neccessarily true, it may just have a catch can fitted as a mod.
Many fit catch cans just for the sake of it, it does not have to mean that the rings are worn. I have a catch can on mine never yet has it needed to be emptied and was fitted from new in Japan.

Agree with Taliesins. As stated, I have a catch tank on my crossflow & its just been rebuilt. Catch tanks are very popular with modders, particularly with those modding jap imports, most often for the 'bling' effect. You can buy these as aftermarket items annodised in a variety of nausiating colours to match your evo/impretza paintwork. It doesn't necessary follow that if a catch tank is fitted, the engine is shagged.

If the seller can prove it was fitted for a legitimant reason fair enough, but a sound surf engine don't need one, I understand the reasons for fitting then on some engines, particually high reving performance engines, which a Surf motor isn't.

But to someone buying a car, a Catch Can should ring all the alarm bells for a worn engine. Let the seller prove its just cosmetic.

All I'm trying to advise the guy buying the truck is that the most usual reason for a catch can ON A SURF is that its breathing oil. With isn't right ON A SURF.

After all, he asked what it was!!

They also help to keep the insides on an intercooler clean.

Its shiny, cos she wanted one.......

We had one, after a few months we took it off as there was absolutly nothing in it, and just took up room.

I'm sure there is nothing wrong with your motor, and you can prove it to everyone by looking in the can.
