Heres a question for all you fishy types - is there any safe/sensible way to have a tropical tank in a bathroom?

I was thinking of putting one in my bathroom when I get around to re-doing it but not sure if its do-able due to the fact that you need power for the lights/filters/pumps etc. Any thoughts?

i shouldnt think theres aproblem with that, when you think about it most lights ,filters etc come into contact with water anyway, you can get waterproof fitting.ie outside electrical points.

Sorry to pour cold water (pun) on the idea but the only socket that you are allowed in a bathroom is an isolated shaver socket.
The idea of using waterproof outdoor sockets sounds ok but it does not stop someone plugging a hairdrier, radio or heater in.
Can't think of any way you could legally have a setup in the bathroom except by having it in an adjoining room and cutting a hole in the wall.
Laugh!!! I nearly bought my own beer.

o.k. thanks, another question (I have bought a couple of books on keeping fish but this was not answered or made clear):

Tropical tanks: do you have to have real plants in the tank, or is there any disadvantage/problems to not having any real plants?

I was just hoping to keep it simple to begin with (i.e. just put in sand/rocks and maybe some plastic plants) at least until I have a bit of experience with the fish and equipment.

you can get any plants which help to oxygenate the water from your local aquarium where you get your fish

Yeah, I know that but what I meant was can I set up a tank initially with no plants at all without harming the fish or whatever?

sorry not concentrating.Yea you can set it up without plants. We used to have plants in our tanks but the fish just used to rip them apart so we never bothered in the end,as long as you have air going into the water then it will be ok

I have all sorts of bits (filtration / heaters etc) so if you wanted to pop over I'm sure I could get together a complete set of kit for you for a small beer fund donation!

The tanks I have up for grabs range from 2ft to 4ft.
you still got any going? my mate is after a bigger tank for a turtle and I would like to get another tank now I have a small one set up.

                                Hi Tim,

I have lots of tanks from 2ft to 4ft and all points in between if you want one for free. They're just taking up space since Vicki booted me out of my fish house in order to make more space for... boots.

That goes for anyone here - free tanks but you've got to collect.
