but could a faulty rad cap cause white/grey from exhust??

I will only cost you a tenner to change it, so you might as well, but white smoke = water in the exhaust. It can only be (a) condensation from it being cold (b) a cracked head (c) a knackered head gasket or (d) something else that someone else will think of.

If it's gone now, don't worry about it.
