  • Fancy a Landcrusier LC5 offroad test drive?

Two weeks ago on Toyota's website (www.toyota.co.uk/off-road) I put my name down for a off road test drive in Landcrusier LC5 in High Wycombe. We did the off road test drive on the 14th in High wycome. It was amazing to see how Toyota's A-TRAC (Active Traction Control) works, no wheel spin, no drama. The LC5 had BFG All Terrain tyres. You can drive the LC5 offroad for an hour and a half also Toyota provided us with free lunch and clay pigeon
shooting. Had a good time! It is worth registering for a off road test drive. At the end they gave us a feedback form to fill in, I put a comment saying "I am impressed with the Landcruiser LC5 but I would prefer the FJ Cruiser (www.toyota.com/fjcruiser) because it is a proper off road toy".

Here is a small video clip from the test drive

    Enjoy!

Why don't we in the UK get to play with the FJ then? no fair!

I mean, yeah its probably got some insane gas-guzzler engine but they could chuck a decent diesel in it, put the steering wheel on the correct side and the jobs-a-good-un.

This is exactly what I told Toyota! They can use the 3.0 D4D diesel engine for it and of course the steering wheel on the correct side. If they market the FJ Cruiser here properly like in the US/Canada they will sell more. In the US they go to 4x4 club events and ask the club members to test drive the FJ Cruiser off road.

You can see some cool videos on http://www.toyota.com/fjtrailteams. Click "videos" under "section 2 TRAIL TEAMS". Also there are some cool videos on http://video.google.co.uk. do a search for FJ cruiser. Check these videos http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?...17790867885183

Anyone know if its available in Japan? Could be a potential replacement/import for the Surf in a few years...

I agree compare to 3rd gen 4th gen uses latest technology and of course it is more practical than the FJ!

FJ is built as a toy to compete with the Jeep wrangler!. I like to go to California next summer to do the Rubicon trial and test drive the FJ offroad. I read it on the latest 4x4 magazine you can hire a modified Jeep wrangler. They charge £400 per person to do the Rubicon trial.

Just watched the video, and to be honest the LC5 didn't do anything that a 2nd gen couldn't do quite easily.

or has the challenging stuff not been filmed?

I looked at booking a test drive at my local center (Chester area), but the only spot available at the moment is this weekend, so no good. I was wondering if they'd let me take my Surf over the course as well, just for the sake of scientific comparison of course.

Looks like I didn't film it correctly! It looks easy but it is not. I've got MT tyres on my H reg Landcrusier LJ70. To climb that hill I have to use a lot of momentum.

Climbing up was challenging, it was wet and slippery chalky surface with tree roots sticking out. Climbing that hill on a 4x4 with AT tyres and without diff locks or traction control is difficult and dangerous because you have to use a lot of momentum to climb up. LC5 managed to climb up in low revs (almost engine tick over) with the BFG AT tyres because of it's A-TRAC. Also it was comfy too.

Doubt it, worth trying! Good luck!!

Soon as they let you drive tell them you've been offroading for a while and ask them to take you to the difficult bits. If you don't they will take you to the boring bits.

I know the feeling. I don't like the DAC (Downhill Assist Control), it makes horrible noises when it kicks in. I had the same experience when I went on a offroad test drive in the new Range Rover this summer in Eastnor castle 4x4 show. My favourite is the 1st gear (manual gear box) in low range!.

I quite like the HAC (Hill-start Assit Control). I heard Toyota is the first one to introduce it in their Landcrusiers.
