  • lsd or stock diff

i read the diff oil needed is different in a LSD , how can i tell which 1 i have , seeing as LSD was an option . 1995 ssr-x . in blue the best colour.

Have a look at the data plate under the bonnet, if the last number of the axle code is a 5 it's LSD, 4 is 4 pinion open diff (91ish on) or 2 for a 2 pinion open diff (early 2nd gens)

There is usually a sticker on the diff housing as well,

Last option is to jack the back axle up, spin one wheel by hand, and if the other goes in the same direction its an LSD, if it spins in the other direction its an open diff.

Correct me anyone if I'm wrong, but most UK 4Runners have the LSD diff and 99% of imports have open diffs. Imports with LSD are very rare.

If you could find a s$$$$py with a 4Runner it should be possible to transplant the LSD axle across to a Surf- but the chances are the LSD clutch mechanisms would be shot on such an old axle. I don't how difficult/expensive a recon would be- Tony?
