  • Fuel Cat

I know they sponsor this site by advertising, but can anyone here give me an honest opinion of the Fuel Cat? They seem to claim almost everything possible to get the car running better while being more efficient - a bit of a holy grail in the fuel world.

As it happens I don't have one on my Surf, but one of my other cars that I've just picked up does (2.8 Capri). I was wondering whether to leave it on or not.

    Thanks in advance.

i will plot up my fuel consumption graph (yes i know sad) with readings over last year, including a fuel cat fitted after a few months
can't say that i saw a vast difference in fuel ecomomy after fitting the heated fuel cat, certainly not even 1mpg increase.
but have also used veg at same time, which might have lowered the mpg

I have noticed the seasons have a big effect, it does around 1-2mpg lower in winter than summer!

I will post annotated graph later

I'll look forward to that - been thinking about fitting one.

ok have attached fuel economy graph, running from April 2005.
Heated fuel cat installed around 25 October 2005,
I also started using veg oil at this time.

        Average mpg has been a shade below 25 mpg, 24.96, in a 3.0TD 2nd gen 4runner.

before fuelcat fitted = 25.38 mpg average
after fuel cat fitted = 24.82 mpg average

mpg dropped about 1 mpg on average over the winter.
when i removed bullbar i got 1.5 mpg increase! but i put bullbar back on anyway

so looks like fuelcat has made no difference for me in mpg.
BUT i have often read veg oil not as efficient, so i will be interested to see soon when i stop using veg oil if it makes a difference to mpg and i will report back,

you're right, veg oil is slightly worse than derv on mpg, but then you're saving anyway on cost per litre/gallon/tank of fuel.
i swear, it was like that when i got here...
