You can adust it on a 3rd Gen, & there is a marker on it for a recommended position. Don't really use it though, but it's quiet handy sometimes as you can see the white line of a parking bay.
It's also asking for it to be ripped off by kids.

I haven't really worked out where it points. I know it points at the front wheel but I mean, conceptually, it won't work with my brain. Can you just rip it off or is it screwed on? If the latter, presumably it'll leave a hole when I take it off.

Prise off the rear cover to access the two bolts that fix it to the wing. You will be left with a couple of holes, but after you've polished the area where the mirror was, it's hardly noticable after a while.
I think I must be the only person who has ever used it, when I've had to parallel park the surf in our tiny lane which is only just two cars wide - I have to get the front spot on in position as it swings out as there is a telegraph pole wire hidden in some bushes and I use the mirror to check the arch against the cable. Still we're moving now so I can rip it off
