Exhaust HELP!!!!

Not long ago, the exhaust fell off where it crosses the rear axle.

As it just sat there on the rear axle and didn't make a different noise, I didn't really equate the new rakish angle of the tailpipe and the fact my cargo gets warmed nicely with a problem!

However, as I have an MOT later this month, I'd better see about getting it replaced.

Options :-

1) Have the bits welded back together in a sleeve to get through the MOT (my mate has offered to make a flash new one, but in his own time)

2) Fit a standard rear pipe

3) Get a full stainless system (I am keeping the truck a while)

Soooo...

a) Anyone got experience of stainless ones for the surf? Who did it? How much?

b) Where's cheapest place to get a replacement back section?

c) Should I sack my mate for being slow?

All this hassle! I have a bl00dy driveshaft boot to sort out too!

cheapest/easiest option is just replace the rear section (or center section, it often rusts in front of the join, and the tail pipe is OK, you might want to check)

I havn't yet found a good stainless place near here, we have a Powerflow in Basingstoke but I wouldn't let them work on any car of mine going by others recent experiances, plus when I went up with Linda's truck they didn't seem interested in anything but getting my money for the least amount of effort.

I can repair/replace the Zorst, do the gaiter and MOT all in one hit if you want.

The whole lot in one go sounds attractive. How long would that take / how much would it cost / when could you do it? I have a gaiter sitting here, and have seen the tail section on eBay for £50. Is this reasonable?

Tony, just had a closer look and it is the centre section just after the box. This is kindo of good news because it means when my mate gets round to make me a fancy back end, I wont be junking a brand new bit of exhaust!

Is the eBay deal for a centre section (£86.50 inc p&p) a good deal, or do you have a cheaper source?

Its OK, Milners are £88 plus p&p, Roughtrax while usually much nicer are £135 plus.

Easiest if you could leave it here for the day, if you supply the pipe and gaiter all your looking at is £45 for the MOT and hour or so's labour charge.

I just figured that the MOT was an hour, not the gaiter... DOH! What sort of time for the whole job, end to end then?

I'm suprised at your problems with Powerflow, Just had a "cat-Back" (from the cross over) done by there Darlington branch for £250 and a very nice job it looks too, they took there time, made sure it fitted up nice and tight and move the tail pipe to where I wanted even though he had to extend the mounts. Perhaps it helps that the boss of the Darlo branch drives a 4x4 not a hot hatch?

I think they're all franchises, the guy running this branch was rude and disinterested.

You've no idea how many people ask me for stainless systems, we could have made up a pattern on Linda's truck, and then they could use the pattern to make others easily or even a set made up on the shelf ready. But no, he was to busy to even look at the truck.

The MOT is an hour (ish) but I wasn't allowing for that, you get that for free! I was thinking not more than 2 hours to do the exhaust and gaiter, probably less, depends on tea breaks and rusty exhaust bolts, then the MOT.

You'd probably want come down for the morning or afternoon depends on what you prefer..
