Want to operate a second desktop PC,
alongside the bench in the garage at home,

Still have main PC here in the house though,


what hardware exactly do I require, to do this,

1;Router with aerials sticking out top
2;PC card/dongle ?
for second PC

(BT Broadband) By the way if it matters.

I have a wirless router conected to the broadband then 3 pcs with wifi dongles, 1 wired directly via a ethernet card to the router.
this works fine.
The 1 i have in my garage even though it well within range gets a low signal as the wirlesss signal has to pass through 2 walls ( 1 house and 1 garage) and also with all the metal around in the garage it can affect the signal.
when you set up the pcs you may need to access the router to get it to learn the mac addresses of your dongles and/or cards.
if you get a router make sure its suitable for your type of connection eg dsl or adsl. some routers also come with a builtin modems.

Just wondering what I need to actually pick up from PC world in the morning

I've plugged in a dongle thing using the garage PC and it worked using a nearby
router although Obviously I don't know how often that might be available
(or indeed where its operating from)

so if its cheap enough I'll install my own

pc world shoud sell a broadband wireless router suitable for BT. if it has the capability for wires as well with sockets on the back then plug in your main machine to that or you can get 2 wireless adapters for the pcs to use them both wirelessly.
I imagin a kit would be £70 ish.

I have just done mine this week and used the Belkin USB wireless adaptor for both my pc's. I was told that some routers are not compatable with certain wireless USB adaptors , but the Belkin ones , i was told should be compatable with most .I paid £29.99 for one and only £15.00 for the other , so may pay to shop around.

yo say you have a dongle already?? if so you can still use that but you may need another one if you main pc wants to be wireless too.

I was told for every pc you want wireless you will need a dongle connected to the pc. I wanted both my pc's wireless which is why i needed two dongles. They both work fine .

1 x router (suitable for adsl/bt)
1 x dongle OR wireless adapter per machine.

dongle plugs in via USB and an adapter is installed internally via a PCI card.

You'll be fine , i know chuff about pc's but i followed the instructions on the set up disc that they came with and bingo ! all worked.

try Maplin first and look at Netgear rather than Belkin as I've had three fail on clients and although they replace it still means down time and hassle

I bought my netgear wireless router/firewall from them and it's been fine - as has already been said it's a doddle to setup

IMO, I have found Belkin to be the best performing and most reliable.

Netgear are ok, but not the best.
