where's me water

Hiya
tinkering with the old gal (not the missus) and discovered I got no water in rad ,so on topping up 3/4 pint missing ,expansion tank level ok, not overheating ,no back pressure everything hunky dory. So my question is ,,,is that normal I know Im not,,,, but what of the surf??

At a rough guess I would suspect the rad cap is not sealing and therefore not allowing the coolant to be sucked back into the rad as the engine cools, Try a new one.
