Mazda Bongo

A little off topic, but anyway....

A friend of mine has a Mazda Bongo camper. It's, I think, G Reg (89) and is NOT the more recent, bigger Bongo Friendee but something like an ES2000 or Midi van.

She had the propshaft fall out the bottom the other day (quality vehicle obviously) and some b@stard nicked it off her driveway. She rang around and was told that it was mechanically the same as an E2000 so bought an E2000 propshaft to find out that they're totally different. She has, instead, bought a Mazda propshaft and had it shipped from Japan.

Being import owners ourselves, I thought I'd chedk whether anyone (a) knows where you can buy Mazda Bongo parts (b) knows if the Bongo is mechanically similar to a UK spec vehicle or more common import. I think it might be the same as a contemporary Nissan Vanette or Mitsubishi Delica.

The problem is that I am not talking about the ludicrously named 'Bongo Friendee' but the entirely sensibly named 'Bongo'. The Bongo Friendee has been around since 1995 but the Bongo since 1978. Can you tell I've been looking into this?

I am looking for parts for the third generation Bongo which ran, I think, from 1989 to 1995. It is based on the Mazda SS platform (the Friendee is SGL) which is common to the Mazda E-Series vans along with the Nissan Vanette and the old style Delica. I think most of the parts can come from an E2000 or E2200 van, but I can't see anything that suggests that these are available as an auto diesel (which the Bongo is) so transmission components (propshafts for example) will probably not fit.

I tried asking the guy that runs Bongo Fury and he knows nothing about the old ones. I have a call in to the dealers, but they're only really interested in the new ones too.
