i have a 2.4 k plate surf and need to change thermostat, can i just swap old for new or do i have to drain rad first.

As far as I know on a 2.4 the thermostat can just be swapped over as it is at the top of the coolant level so to speak. You may lose a small amount of coolant but not a lot I wouldnt have thought.

You only need to drain off about a litre of coolant.
