gears !!!! (deja vue)

have been finding that my surf does not want to go into gear (sometimes )
think it has something to do with the 4x4 stick as if i move that the button on top of the shift goes in and it slides into gear no prob!!
although not a major prob its a bit annoying , any ideas what i can do to stop this
havent been using 4x4 so its not as if im not putting it back properly

Dunno! Maybe checking connections on the transmission and transfer case?
Check transmission fluid level.
Check both brake lights are working, no really, they are connect into the transmissions electrics!
