  • 1st gen 4runner / surf help needed

I'm currently looking at a 1st gen to buy , now my problem is insurance.

I phoned my current insurers who insure my 2nd gen for £290 per year fully comp.
I told them that I want my missis as the main driver on the new truck , she's 50 has driven for 30 years has no points or accidents. They said that because I'm with them and have 9 years no claims then they would match that for the 4runner , excellent I thought.
But then came the bombshell , they want to charge £433 fully comp ! , I said that was extortionate and they immediatly dropped it to £392 fully comp.

I know it's a left hand drive , but it's 20 years old and I only declared the value at £350 for the truck. Surley being LHD it wouldn't bump up the price by that much.

So my question is..... How much do you other prestigious 1st gen owners pay and who are you with ? I really want to get a 1st gen but at that price I can't afford to insure the thing.

    Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Andy.

I would go with another insurance company, and insure it in your wifes name, with you as a named driver.

If I can get a better deal elsewhere I'll move , they have already annoyed me once already this year when they tried to put up my premium by £80 , even though I had never made a claim.

I'm into my second year with Tesco insurance, and it has gone down £20 from last year, fully comp, missus as second driver, insured to drive any vehicle, (with owners consent) and under 5000 miles per year. £271

i'm with lifesure fully comp but can't remember what the price was?!?!?? i'll have a look later for you but it was £400 odd and i got 6 points and drive a taxi (which normally screws you for private insurance).

LHD does make a difference as it's considered more difficult to drive - WHY? still only 1 steering wheel, few pedals and a lever or 2.

where's it from to be a lefty then?
i swear, it was like that when i got here...

I had the same problem with our LHD 1st gen, a lot of the Jap import insurers are $$$$ for LHD cars. Try Adrian Flux - they came in at about £270 for ours. They have an insurer who does specialise in LHD imports.

That's how the drummer from Def leppard lost his arm , going round a dodgy bend , crashed and exited a corvette by the sunroof , but left his arm in the car.

Insurance companies often charge more for LHD. Both myself and my mate had the same age VW Beetles 1972. His insurance was £60 more than my RHD.
Odd. My other mate had a problem with a LHD Jeep.
                        i like it muddy!

because as an hgv driver you're specialist because not anyone can just pay and go do as you say, but as a cabbie you drive the same type vehicles as all other drivers but have to wear trousers and a shirt and shave occasionally and when you got to put up with the dreggs of society from a pub, listen to them doing their mickey mouse plastic gangster weekend hard nut 'i knew the krays' speeches, drive them to a keebab house before they scratch around for the change to pay when you get their loser body's home (wasted £100 on booze in the pub but can't pay the fcuking bloke who gets them home to their door without them getting stabbed by some other weekend gangster they give it 'large' to) then get the verbal (and occasional mistimed lunge at a punch or threaten your life) for just trying to do your job....

....thats where the professional driver tag comes in because even after all that, i can't give them a kicking or else i lose my license.

but if an hgv driver got half as much sh1te while trying to do his job, he'd give a good kicking to the fcukers, get a slap on the back of the hand and be back at work following week (and fair play too might i add).

now i know tonnes of real wanchors do the cab job, but many of them were made that way purely by the job.

                            unlike myself...i was born one!

                            next?

I am with Adrian Flux as recommended by me boy TonyN . Ask for American car section and they will be OK . I payed £310 last year , just paid £295 for this year , 3000 mile limited mileage , parked on road , 2nd car , no no claims. Had a claim within 3 weeks of insuring and they were fine , as not my fault . I went everywere else first and was quoted upto £1300 !
As for the value , it is irrelevant when taking out cover , I know because I am an Insurance assessor ! When mine was hit I told the assessor it was worth £2000 and he agreed .
Tell Adrian Flux it is worth £1600 and will be worth more when renovated .
I had just bought mine when it then got hit , I had a receipt from Sumo for a cetrain amount , but I had done work on the vehicle within the 3 weeks so it added value .
