    advice please

i have just been to see a replacement for my surf should the cooling issue not get solved this weekend, right its a 3 gen in baby blue, ssrg with full recaro just like my 2 gen, its done 55k kms unlike mine

the question is do 3 gens rot, i mean i have seen half a dozen of them now and the chassis's all have a litte rust and lots of the bolt heads are rusty ie the ones that hold the roof rails on and rear spolier.
is this normal as my 2 gen has hardly any rust.
    cheers john

depends how you look at it... mines nearly 10 years old and has less rust that most newer cars... think the 5 year old mondeo is rustier

I think he was meaning rust as in 3rd gen compared to 2nd gen. All
rust is from a viewpoint of comparation, but theoretically the 3rd's
should have less than most 2nd's. Or is the build quality or are the
materials not as robust. Hell, confusing myself now.

How's it going with the 2.4 John?

Linda's 2nd gen is rustier than my 3rd gen... does that count?

think the roof channels are a bit of a watter trap... the only other real rust was where the underslung spare is close to the exhaust... the pipe rusted through.

apart from that it was spotless when i got it

Sounds like the gens are the same, then. Look after them and they'll
          retain their condition well.

my 1st gen has less rust than my mate's '98 Disco. it gets more mpg and more passing looks, but unfortunately more smoke too. those Disco's are fecking horrid things, drove it home from a pub for him once, went to do the 1st roundabout and it leaned so much nearly shat myself, i thought something was seriously knackered on it but he reckons thats the norm!
i swear, it was like that when i got here...

              hiya mattf
yeah your right i was on about build quality, im tempted coz its an intercooled ssrg.

as for the 2.4 well i have collected my rad and milners have delivered my new pump but its too bloodie hot to fit at the mo, as you can tell im looking for a replacment as i think the 2.4 is not up to the job of towing the caravan, as a vehicle i just love it, off road, on road, pulling trailers its brill but stick a 1.4 tonne caravan on the rear and show her a hill and she sh1ts herself.

tommorow i will fit the rad and pump and at the weekend i will go and pull the van up a few welsh hills to see if all is ok, if not then ................
