  • Roof rack

Hi all was at the local boot sale to day and picked up a set of Thule roof bars
in mint condition for a tenner. When I got them home I set about looking how they could be made to fit the surf, as the fitting kit was for a BMW something or other (kit 145). The foot side of it is fine but the way they attach to the roof is via a lug that is under the door seal on the BMW. Now looking at the drawing it looks like these things are screwed on, so if I was to go down to the local breakers and get a set of these. What do you think I might hit if I screw them on (looks like it won't hit the door) or would it be strong enough to fix them to the roof there. Or do I just go buy the right fixing kit ! cheers for any advice John.....

Oh and p.s anyone know what the kit number is ?

That foot doesn't look right to me, if it is, the fitting kits are only about 20 quid from halfrauds or somewhere. It's the bars and foot packs that are expensive.

For the sake of £20 i'd buy the proper fitting kit for the car rather than screw into the roof or anything. I'll go take a couple of pics of mine in a bit, so you can see how well it fit's.

You'll need the 950 foot pack.

Looking at the picture I don't think you can make a sucure enouth fitting using a screw, as it would be held at one place, whereas the proper kit grips a good portion of the seal, and clamps tightly.
If I was you I would look for the proper fitting kit.

Ok and thanks for advice will pop down to halfrauds tomorrow and get the right bit even if it is twice what I paid for the other bits. One other thing what's the max distance between the bars as need to get about 80cm to get my bike rack on. Once again the forum members have pointed me in the right direction cheers all John

They look like the bars I had for my E36 Beamer. theres a screw welded into the bodywork hidden under the door seals.........reminds me must dive in to shed and flog em on..

Sound like the same as the ones I have will let you know what the fitting kit cost and then no need to flog them re-use them on the surf
