The most notable thing on mine was the big cloud of white smoke behind and the water chucking out of the expansion tank. There was always a definite drop in performance just before it spat, normally just as the temperature crept up a little bit from a hill, turning the heaters down or something. I suppose it was probably the cracks opening up and preparing to launch the cap off the tank.
