  • How Bad or Good are they really

I was just thinking, this forum is a lot to do with people needing help when their Surfs go wrong and a lot of the reading is doom and gloom about overheating , heads knackered etc. are they really all that bad compared to other 4 wheel trucks? Has anybody any idea? Thoughts please

Nearly every vehicle has a common big fault with it . Paj... things have head probs , Lamedovers have engine/gearbox probs . It goes on . Try owning a Lotus , now that is trouble !

The worst 4x4 has to be the Landrover freelander 1.8 petrol, they have 100% engine failer rate head gaskets go then the liners slip, it is well known in the trade but they keep on selling them second hand buy which time they will all have had a new engine and the new owner is sitting on a time bomb of cost. The Surf is by far the best I have had. The KZN 185 is sweet, does not have a viscous fan so its on all the time, so no over heating (i hope) so it could be worse you could have a junklander

i'd imagine a large portion of the forum users only get on here to solve a problem therefore it just seems like the surfs are just a headache, but its not true, if every member done a monthly I am or iam not happy with the surf post, you probably find that most would be happy and with no problems.

apart from me of course as mine is an old b!tch!!!

(but am starting to love it again as nearly all done now!!!should be on road by about hmmmmmm, errrrrrrrr 2008ish)
i swear, it was like that when i got here...

Its not all doom and gloom alot of us are here for the banter ...To help others ...and to show off our Mods ...and Use it like a owners club

After you start to meet people at events organised on here you start to take a intrest in their projects... Or help after they try to fix their truck after trying a puddle or mud pool too deep OR just say i told you so ...
In my view the forum is a place where a group of people with the same intrest try to help eachother with alot of light hearted Banter

i have had a lot of different cars, rs's cossies and the like, and i've never had so much fun as i've had in my smurf! my head popped but luckily under warrenty, so not had any huge bills. Just given it a service, and im sure any novice could do it. especially with the help of the guys on here.

dont forget its a 12 year old truck at the newest for a 2nd gen, and for my money the best grin per pound ratio of any car. even the missus loves it!!

I think you also have to remember that, although there maybe half a dozen people with problems [of the Surf variety!] on here at any one time, there are thousands who are happily driving around in Surfing bliss...

Well.... Tony spends all day every day working on surfs, fixing them, lifting them, servicing them. He knows all their faults inside out...and what do we drive, out of choice??

Surfs, thats what. So they can't be that bad can they???

Great cars! Most reliable motor I've ever owned, and pretty easy to work on for most stuff it seems.

Every problem I've ever had with mine has been inflicted on it by me and the way I totally abuse it.

I worked at landrover specialists for quite a few year and i would never ever contemplate buying one! Any model!! Transfer boxes, clutch slaves cyl, brake slave master cyl, Gear boxes, cv's and cv seals. The list is endless!
I love my surf and i am dredding the day the head goes? wether it has already been done who knows? It came with no paper work! But it may never go. There are loads of cars out there with these common fault heads/head gkts yet there are loads of that model that never need them. I suppose it all comes down to good servicing? And as many on here say, we are a minority compared to the amount of surf owners out there.
