  • Do all Surf's have adjustable suspension?

    Hi people , great forum

I bought this 2 door SSR last year and took this picture at Bures

It is great fun a brings plenty of smiles but I've got a soggy backside! I've been looking at lift kits but I'm not sure I can modify my vehicle. Do all Surf's have adjustable suspension from inside the cab and will a lift kit fit anyway?

I not sure of what options I have so any tips would be greatly appreciated.

If you fit a suspension lift (longer springs and shocks) on the back you will need to crank up the front Torsion bars as well (can be cranked up about 1 1/2". With 2" longer springs on the back it will sit slightly higher at the back but look good.

Alternatively you can just fit standard length uprated springs that will bring it back to the normal attitude without lifting. Milners and Roughtrax do them.

The Surf is Highly modifyable, you can lift the suspension, fit a body lift, bigger Tyres, Cut down bump stops, longer shocks, bash plates etc etc etc etc. Just depends how deep in your pocket you want to go.

By the way, nice looking truck, I do like the 2 door 2nd Gen.

      Cheers

Nice picture Simbad, got a '91 2 door SSR meself and I dont have adjustable shocks. A friend though has an '89 2 door SSRLtd and he has the adjustable option, so it looks like its just me and you and any other rugged SSR people

            Hi Linda,

I like the look of this Surf too, I bought it as soon as I saw it in Westcliff on Sea, Essex. I was looking for a new family car and as I walked past this SSR and wanted it instantly. So I parted with my hard earned cash on the spot.

Out of interest, how difficult and what is involved in a body lift? I see Supertrux offer to do it for an extra £325 which seems reasonable.

You can get the bits (Lift blocks) for less than £100 and fit them yourself, however you will need help to do it and a decent jack and lots of wood blocks.

The Body bolts to the chassis in (I think) 12 or 14 places and the body lift involves unbolting all these points, lifting the body clear of the mounting points by jacking up, inserting the new blocks and rebolting up.

However you can only go a small way with a body lift without needing to modify the gear lever and the steering shaft. On an Auto you can go 1" to 2" I think without modification however any more and you will need to modify the auto shifter and also install a spacer on the steering column shaft. On Manuals I think you have less trouble with the shifter. The kits often come with new bumper mounting brackets (or you need to make your own) as the bumper mounts to the chassis not the body and consequently leaves a gap between body and bumper. New brackets solve this.

You can get 1" lift kits including bumper brackets from Roger brown in the US.

              http://4crawler.cruiserpages.com/4x4...yLiftKit.shtml

There is also some really good info on what is involved as well.

LA Supertrux only do 2" upwards but they could be cut down to the size required.

              Cheers

                Lucky,

Great and thanks, most informative. Are there any issues with the steering column, brake/fuel lines, wiring etc. by lifting 1"?

1" should be OK, Only mod will be the bumper brackets. Roger Brown does the Full ultimate block kit with bumper brackets for $93 plus shipping which shouldn't be much more than $50 if that. All the lines will have enough give in them to cope with the extra 1".

                  Cheers

Andy's given you plenty on the Body Lift, but I actually went for a 2" suspension lift on mine... which is quite simple to do... Just 2" longer rear springs and crank up the tortion bar on the front 1 1/2 " to match (assuming yours are adjustable)
Personally I also changed the shocks at the same time to Procomp gas shocks... and got uprated Tortion bars too. The whole thing cost about £400 from LA Supertrux (but just springs would be much cheaper...). The car handles much better now, and I have the extra clearance for the offroad stuff.

Reading Roger Brown's website is quite interesting

A 1" body lift can make accessing parts on the engine like filters and the starter *so* much easier, this is an often overlooked side benefit of a body lift.

I am tempted with a 2" lift, but I think a 1" lift is going to be my first mod. I'll still need to do something about the saggy backend too.

Only problem on a Surf would be the front suspension. With Torsion Bars it' wouldn't be useable. You would need to look at rigging up the front to be somewhat like a 3rd Gen with Coils and then use the spring mounts.

Alternatively you could go to a solid front axle although most of the solid axle conversions use leaf springs.

Would be a great conversion if you could do it although I'm pretty sure the articulation with one of these setups would be seriously compromised.

                              Cheers
