i am sorry to say i have just finished my teaching exams etc and now fully qualified, this means of course that i need a sensible car, and her indoors has made me sell the Surf and get a Citroen Picasso, believe me its a sad day. Still i will stay on the site and may import another one in a couple of months

Damn I thought I had problems trying to decide whether to get rid of the surf for a Range Rover (need something more business like) or keep the surf and buy a BMW 840i to use for business.

What do you mean by more business like? The Surf is my business
vehicle, and wouldn't dream of changing it for something else. It has
the space, the abilities to reach awkwardly located customers, , and
doesn't give you an image that shouts t**t like the new Range Rover's.
(I really hate the shape of the new R.R's. They look like a packing
crate on wheels).

More business like

The surf would work for work if I had a more manual job.
See am a headhunter and I have to meet some pretty important people from time to time, and a j reg surf really doesn't cut it.
One of the reasons I have not got a range rover yet is because I know I will feel a bit of a $$$$ driving it, and I am considering a land rover (not new shape) or maybe a landcruiser.
I would really regret getting rid of the surf I know, not because of the image, as to be honest I've seen a few surfs that I'd feel a $$$$ driving, but because its machanically such a $$$$$$ good vehicle, but business is a fickle thing and when my colleagues drive 50k bmws etc a J reg surf does not cry success!!!!

Call me an old fashioned stick if you will, but image is exactly
that, image. The people who try to induce an image by what
they possess and how they appear will always be one step
behind the people who do not care. This applies to business
as well as normal, everyday life. It is neither a prerequisite
for business nor home life. I, personally, in my business role,
have more distrust of a flashy type than someone who looks
like they have just got out of bed and is driving a vehicle that
appears to have been reclaimed from a s$$$$yard. My
personal opinion only, however.

I agree with you Matt, and for the environment I work in I really don't conform. I have very long red hair and I am certainly not what people expect when I turn up at meetings. Ironically I think that over the years this has actually helped in a world that has so many conformists. I have made very good long term business relationships simply because people have seen some thing different in me and like you say, feel they can maybe trust me more as clearly I am not making my life easy by becoming a business stereotype.
More recently I have been using a new BMW 525i to goto meetings and that has helped and even a few clients have commented that I have finally bought a decent car. I know they are joking but theres always an element of truth behind there somewhere.
Another reason for not wanting to use the surf for work is that we are country folk..haha and its normally pretty dirty, and full of logs or tools, and you don't feel very business like when traveling a meeting.
I have pretty much made my choice, that because I love it so much I am going to keep the surf, and buy a BMW 840i, I have always wanted one and I get the best of both worlds.
The surf is so cheap to run as a daily vehicle, I use mine a lot and it hardly ever needs attention. Just got it MOTed and all it needed was the front part of the exhaust which cost under 50 squid. Not bad for a 15 year old vehicle.
