  • UK 4Runner sunroof

now I have back window sorted
thought i would try and fix sunroof that has never worked properly in 2 yrs since i got truck.

It seems to be different to the Surf ones, from the searchs ive done.

there are 2 arrow buttons. When i press one the drivers side of sunroof lifts up, tilts. But passenger side not budging.

I reckon it tilts only, as doubt it slides over top of roof?
There is no way it slides underroof, above headlining, impossible.

The motor has 2 solid metal pipes going to drivers side and 2 going to passenger.
I am wondering if its hydraulic?

I can unclip the glass on drivers side, catch under glass, but cant get at non lifting side.
cant get trim out of way, as screw heads at top, under glass... so need to move glass to undo.

There are no allen key manual wind thingys

anyone on here got experience of a UK 4runner sun-roof?
as iut seems completely different to surf one?

It will not be hydraulic . Must sunroofs I have worked on are gear and notched cable , similar to a electric aeriel mast gear assembley . Usually the gear strips on the cable one side or the cable snaps . Not usually a difficult job to get roof glass out and then access the gearbox . Toyota should do the parts if available .

why 2 sets of pipes going to each runner/side?

from searches i see that the cable systems have a single cable on each side, not 2

I know this isn't exactly the answer, but you might be able to get some helpful hints....
        It just does, OK?

I have a uk 4runner and mine does exactly the same thing as the surfs roof.
The 2 buttons are to spot you killing the kid whos head is stuck out the window just incase you can not see him they want you to press both buttons when you go to shut the roof. A useless idea as far as I can see.
I have never seen a surf with a sunroof that tilts either, with it being soo big it would seem silly to me just to have it tilt.

Are you sure they are pipes and not covered spiral gears. Two sets could be one for up and one for down with a separate motor. I would expect that the problem you have is caused either by gear wear on the passenger side or by the end of the gear coming disconnected or by dirt accumulation.

definitely steel pipes - shiny and around same size as brake pipes.

what do the covered spiral gears look like?

maybe i have an aftermarket sunroof,
as it is nothing like the surf one.
it only has 3 buttons,. up, down and light

I will post pics later! as better than words

there will be pipes going down the a pillar to drain water away from the gubbins around the sunroof...
                it's in me shed, mate.

these pipes go direct into motor assembly

couldnt see any holes for drain pipes in the rubber seal
                  where do they exit?

There are 4 drain pipes, one in each corner.

Never seen a Surf or 4Runner Sunroof that tilts, they all slide only.

Take some pics, I reckon you've got an aftermarket one.

Yep Tony - I'm pretty sure now its aftermarket,
                      as

                      1) motor has "made in italy" on it
                      2) where the headlining has been cut (obscured now) its a waggly cut, not a factory straight cut!

pics attached to show pipes and the unit

so need to figure out how to fix it now!

                      glass is http://www.taylormarine.co.nz/ taylor made

and small label says "ZANI rsl sunroofs"

Andy , like I said , in my opinion , you have a stripped cable . You have 2 cables , 1 for left , 1 for right . You have 4 tubes as the cable runs through from each side and out the other .
Hope that is a little clearer .I have worked on similar system before . The 'cover' that surrounds the interior of the roof should have screws hidden behind clipped in covers which need to be removed to get to the motor and system .

                          took whole lot apart

                          worm cable thing fine
but it has a metal guide attached to it, that should fit in plastic slot,
                          but this is broken.
so it can close roof, but assembly gets left behing on opening..

will try and pin and glue the broken plastic part, but its not that big...
