  • confused about rear ends

well bought meself a 91 Hilux, Surf for a huge sum of money and checked it over and drove it hime.
superb aren't they, not as nippy as my zt, bigger too but amazing vehicle, trouble is I'm confused about where to put the spare wheel with its nice new tyre on it.
Read all about mounting points etc, the pro's and cons, and went out to have another look.
I have centre mounted rear number plates, with reversing lights, but underneath no holder, no predrilled holes for one. However on the right hand side are six bolts three above rear lights, three below, but again no spare wheel bracket ??
Anyone explain please, guy I bought it from reckons it arrived without a spare and he had to buy one to pass his first MOT

You could either find the underslung spare wheel gubbins plus a bumper with the hole in the centre for the winding handle, or find a replacement spare wheel carrier for the rear, as you already have the bolt holes for it,plus you'll need a different tailgate/numberplate arrangement plus replacement rear lights with reversing lights in them.

Have a browse on Ebay for Toyota hilux Surf parts.

That's the problem, got the hole in the bumper, but no gubbins, got the nuts and bolts for the tailgate version but number plates and lights for the underneath version
I suppose its possible that a different rear end door has been fitted ?

Have a look inside the offside rear pilllar to see if the reinforcing plates are there for the rear mounted spare wheel carrier. If they are you have the perfect opportunity to customise a spare wheel, +farm jack + jerry can holder. There is a silver lining to every cloud.

didn't think you needed a spare for the MOT, just if you had one it had to be legal. In my more imporverished sportscar owning days I used to leave the spare at home at MOT time.
Parts of your engine go up, stop then go back! Mm!

You don't need a spare for the MOT - it is not a legal requirement, but it must be roadworthy if present.

You could always carry the spare in the boot if you don't need the space. Modern cars come with a space-saver (if you get a spare at all ...), so most of my family now drive round with a full-size spare in the boot rather than risk driving on the mini-spare.

Sounds like you have got a truck that was in the middle of a conversion from rear mounted to underslung..........
