Thermostat

All this talk of cracked heads due to overheating has got to me. So I went and bought a new thermostat and 10 litres of good quality red coolant.
I now come to look where to begin. The thermostat looks in a really hard spot to get to easily. Can anyone tell me the best way to tackle it and is there anything I should strip off first ie any pipes etc. Is it best done from underneath or from the top.

Unfortunately these are not for a 3.0TD and the thermostats in a different place to a 2.4

I have it on my machine at home but am at work so cant have a look...
