  • Tow bars (again)

    Hi all.

I have been given a trailer tent - which is all fine and dandy except I dont have a tow bar to pick it up

Having had a read on here, I get the impression that towequipe are the people to get one from (I have someone who is happy to fit it) - but there seems to be far too much choice for my pea brain!

It needs a ball joint thingy (I think), is that an 'extra', and what is all this about electrics - is there any advantage/disadvantage to the kind of electrics option?

Sorry to sound so dense - good job I dont have to fit it - with my luck i am bound to order the wrong thing, so thought I had better check with the experts before parting with my money.

    thanks in advance

single electrics is ok for normal trailers, double is for caravans that need power as well as indicators and stuff. i think my towbar came with the ball hitch... they do need a coat of paint though...supplied in black primer. fitting is a doddle- i managed it!
    it's in me shed, mate.

All towbars need a standard towball. Some are swan neck where the ball is part of the towbar while the usual British system is to have a ball that bolts on to the towbar. Modern caravans need either a modern thirteen ( I think that that is correct) pin socket or two (black and grey) traditional sockets. All these connections are needed to run all the electrics of a modern caravan. Older caravans and trailers will only need the black socket.

Just got mine from towequipe today, 107 all in with electrics, tow ball etc. Just waiting for the paint to dry then its going on this afternoon, looks to be a piece of the proverbial.
        Cheers

        MPG? Don't you mean GPM.

Just got mine as well, real solid looking bar with single electrics, got the large stainless steel bumper protector as well, only £128 delivered.

What did you paint it with, i used hammerite on my first towbar though it wasnt long before it started to peel.
I used waxoil on my second bar i fitted and it looked better and cleaner for a lot longer than the hammerite one did.

Mine is already on but out of interest do Toyota provide a connection for the electrics? I know my mates disco had a socket behind one of the rear lights and my old Pajero had one in the jack compartment under the rear seat, mind you I found that out after I had done it the hard way.
Parts of your engine go up, stop then go back! Mm!

Surfs dont have a socket like the landys, you just have to wire up to the back of the lights and if you need 12V you have to run that from the front.
