Had mine for nearly a year and love it. Bought it initially for work and because it looks cool!

It carries around 500kg+ everyday gets booted around in all weather, traffic and off-road and has not missed a beat.

It's a brilliant car, comfortable and is the most reliable car I have owned (well apart from my beemer, but that aint 9 yrs old!)

Go for the 3.0 as you were saying. Mine is a 2nd gen.

    Rich.
If life's an uphill struggle then downhill from now on can't be that bad?!

dont think there'll be a next time for me, these damn 3.0 ltrs with their fancy facelifts and next generation stuff bah!

if i get fed up with the 2446cc baby i have outside the window here it'll be coz i'm gettin ripped off for tax and insurance and fuel and green taxes but i wont ever sell it, never. might end up back in a 800cc mini someday but the surf will still be outside the door beaming with pride of place on our drive (i have an 11 yr old vw too and cant bear the thought of flogging it, its just too good of a car. including the grass outside the sitting room window in my 3 bed semi, i have spaces for another 3 love bugs)

        UK Deisel costs??

Wow, I am noticing that fuel costs seem to be a concern in the UK, can some-one post up the cost per litre and also what a UK tradesman earns so I can get a better comparrison.
Here in New Zealand deisel is not heavily taxed at NZ$0.59/l. We also have to pay Road user Charges which are a couple of cents a Km for a light vehicle.
This makes the running costs for our 1990 Surf 2LT-E about the same as our 1600cc Carolla.
So- to travel 1000km would probably cost (deisel and Road User Charges) NZ$ 80-90, or about 6 hours for a tradesman carpenter after-tax. I understand that NZ wages are lower than UK but things here are cheaper to buy, does this seem right?

i was talking averages, not a chippy so dont know, as not had to work on sites for years. got cushdie job now and get paid very well for it too.
              personally i dont give a s*** how much petrol/deisel road tax/insurance
cost COZ if i get that tight for money, lots of other things will go before my surf.

                  78.9p/l around here. Most places I've seen range from 76 - 82p/l.

I've noticed that there appears to be a lot of people selling there surfs after very short periods of time eg. less than 12 months. Can anyone generalise as to why this appears to happen so frequently.
Is it a point on reliability?
I know that some find them heavier on fuel than they expected. (My homework suggests 20 around town / 30 on a run for 3.0TD)
I am interested in buying a 3.0 Surf, but am feeling a little nervous in dipping my toe...
                    Any advice much appreciated.
                    Mark..
Thanks to all for answering this. Now all I have to do is find the right one. Was persuing a SSR-G 3.0TD. Apperance was good, but I had not checked the mechanicals. Unfortunately my dilly dallying has cost me, as the vehicle is now sold.
                    Merry Xmas to you all.

Hi Mark. Have had my 2.4L SSR-X since the beginning of July and I am very pleased with it. I do mostly motorway with it and occasional offroading (some more serious than I should attempt with my only car). I have done a bit of towing with it and I think I need the uprated springs.
The great thing is you can load it up like a van, for the tidy tip and its not a commercial, so they let you in.
                        It's only a hobby!
