getting a new car on thursday, do'nt worry still keeping the surf,it's the wife's megane after 15 months of hell, the worst car i have ever bought it has spent more time in the renault garage than my garage, its a 54 reg we got it from new, it has had 4 new engine managment chips, new air con unit new head lamp fitted, engine revs low then cut out all the time and the final staw last week on its 18000 mile service i was told the clutch was on its way out which was not covered on the warranty, after thinking what will go wrong next we decided to get shot, so now i am out of pocket of around £3500 but amanda is now happy becouse she is getting a 53 reg hyundia coupe 2.0 se. i just hope this one is ok, time will tell

I have a Laguna Initiale (company car not my own property thank goodness) which is the top of the line with electric leather seats with heating dual climate control, cabasse audio electric folding mirrors polarising glass all round sat nav built in it even has a speed limiter as well as cruise control. You can't get any more toys this has them all!!!!!

Its 18 months old and has had over 5 grands worth of warrenty claims ranging from climate control to new clutch which they did cover on the warrenty. New door locks all round new electric window motors x 2, 3 clutch slave cylinders new engine management module and on and on and on. I am paying benefit in kind taxation on a 24 grand car and its the biggest pile of Poo I have ever had the missfortune to drive. Im stuck with it until Feb 07 when the lease expires.

NO ONE SHOULD EVER BUY A RENAULT WITH THEIR OWN MONEY

They are far from reliable, The clutch on the laguna is the most common problem. Slave cylinder fails and the pedal sits on the floor. I have to pull it up with my foot to get drive back when its about to fail as it does regularly.

When it starts failing I drive without the clutch for all but stops and starts. The gearbox is GM same as a vectras and will change without clutch quite well if the driver is capable.

I am mates with the parts man at a main renault dealer and the staff there all laugh about the range of cars as they are all so unreliable. The sales and service managers both advise their pals not to ever be tempted to buy one.

Mine is worse because its top of the range and has just so much that can go wrong with it. AND IT DOES SO OFTEN.

My Dad has just got rid of his 2 1/2 yr old company car a Renault Laguna estate TDI its been nothing but utter $$$$ for him, the middle pipe of the exhaust went straight away, the tyre presure sensors needed replacing at £50 a throw 5 per tyre the rear wipper motor went, door lock bust, sun roof got stuck open The turbo decided to pack up so for the past 6 months he's been driving in with no turbo oh and the radiator needs replacing all in all it need £2500 to get it right so they had it valued at just over 3 grand so it wasnt worth doing , fair enuff it had 136000 mile on it but still! so eventually the turbo shattered and propper fooked the engine.
So just arrived is a new Ford Mondeo TDI
so he's gone from Reliable renault to Fix Or Repair Daily , one day his company will learn and buy something Jap
              Cheers

he was right though...you can rely on them being s**t. never buy french, especially renault, they're less dependable than TVR and the parts always need to be ordered, utter cack.

Not strictly the same. There exists a number of minor differences between this and an ordinary Renault.

life expectancy of both this, and your regular renault will be about the same however.

I bought from new a Renault 19 1.9D in 1994 and until I sold it last year to trade up to my surf it never let me down. Put over 110k on it and never had to spend more than the annual service on it. I was sorry to see it go and only changed it through wanting a surf and not through any mechanical issues.
I think every model of car has some bad ones and renault are no better or worse than any other make.

Prior to purchasing me Surf in 2001, I had 5 1/2 years trouble free motoring from me Renault 19 RND even after 186,000 including running around Europe.
It had to go as the need for a Surf was calling
