  • still heavy snow and drifting in NE Scotland

Weve had heavy snow up here since last Tuesday
and woke up to lane from our house blocked by drifts
one of neighbours works weekends and tried to get out in Ford Maverick
he didnt get far -see picture

I went to tow him back with 4runner, but tractor came along - it has more pulling power!!

the snow just keeps on coming
    we have 1.5ft deep undrifted!

    4-5ft deep drifts

only getting the southerners back for they snow they had a few weeks ago, when I had none - and showing you lot what real snow looks like!

have been out x-country skiing from home and didnt climb a single fence!
all were drifted over with snow, amazing - so skied over them
and still lots of blocked roads around
havent seen this much snow in years

Not seen any proper snow in Bournemouth since about 1989, Think I should move to Scotland, certainly cheaper than paying thousands on winter holidays.

So what's this cross country skiing all about then, is it difficult ?
We were in Seefeld in Austria this year and apparently it's the biggest x-country area in europe, my missis fancies having a go at it next year.

cross-country skiing easy until you go down hill! then more challenging

the skis have serrations on base in middle part, or you use sticky wax - like prit-stick glue. so this gives you grip to kick and glide on alternate feet.
very fast for travelling around over snow.

The skis are narrow, no metal edges, and training-shoe light weight shoes.
and shoes only attach by toes to ski

For ski mountaineering, I use Fat Rossignol B3 bandits (alpine ski) with telemark, free-heel bindings, but large chunky plastic boots, as sturdy as alpine kit.
to go up hill, you but things called "skins" on base of ski, attached at tip abnd tail and adhesive sticks them to base of ski. the are a type of nylon, brushed in one direction, so you get grip to stop ski going backwards.
When you get to top of hill you wip the skins off and carve up the powder offpiste on way down!

                  Surf Snow Fun

                  Hi Andy and All

I took the Surf over Cairn O' Mount(Hill between Banchory and Laurencekirk) on Sunday along the B974. The road was closed ,but I ventured on. A couple of areas were a bit iffy but nothing The Beast could not handle. Just backed up and tried again. I even had the pleasure of helping out a '05' landcruiser who did not have the correct tyres to deal with the drifts. The lad chickened out and turned around.

Anyway here are some pics of SCOTLAND's Snow.
