  • Free Wheeling Hubs and Cone Washers

Hi people, does any body know where i can get the cone washers for the free wheeling hubs from, other than Toy(daylightrobbery)ota. They want £2.19 each, thats about £31 including Vat for 12 tiny cone washers.
    Help please...........

The washers are not listed but they do a kit. Give 'em a call.

Ive not lost them, come to do a swivel hub seal change, using the cheating method of just replacing the back and found out the hubs have been filled with grease by the previous owner. So have got to do a full strip down and clean up, needless to say when i started taking the free wheeling hubs of, they have been on that long on the drivers side that the little buggers wouldn't shift and managed to destroy all six getting them off. So i thought i would get 12 cos god knows what the passenger side will be like.
These things are sent to try us i suppose!

errr, are we talking about Toyota solid front axle steering knuckles here? they are supposed to be filled with grease!!

            ?

How are you getting the washers out, a smart whack with a heavy hammer on the edge of the hub right level with the cone washer never fails to get them out, and my 4Runner had spend the last 14 years launching boats into salt water, so it knows all about rust and I got them out no bother!!

I have a few cone washers kicking around if you can't get any, not sure its a full set though.

Hi Tony, its a 92 pick-up, and its the swivel hubs, arent they filled with axle oil, I know the free wheeling hubs are greased up, but the swivel joint is part of the axle and has oil seals in it. Correct me if I'm wrong mate as you probably know more about them than i do. Or is it just a case of crossed wires. As for the cone washers, Yes your right a swift hit on the side of the hub does usually shift them, but i have never encountered any as hard in as these, they just didn't want to budge.
Having a little trouble sourceing the cone washers cheap enough, ****** expensive for a tiny bit of metal, so if that offer is still on the table, let me know how much you want for them or if you just want me to cover the postage. Had a look at the passenger side today and it looks like they wil free up easier, as they dont seem to be as far in as the ones on the drivers side were. So if you have half a dozen that would be great.

              Cheers David

Yeah, the swivels only need to be packed with grease (Molybdenum disulphide lithium NLGI 2 if you really want to be correct!! ) the same stuff you grease the UJ's with.

If they've got axle oil in them, the previous owner was probably a Land Rover owner, or the seals in the axle ends are shot and diff oil is getting out.

I have a look see how many cone washers I can gather up!

Cheers for that Tony, I was under the impression they were filled with oil as the mk 2 i had had oil in them and i was told that was right by guess what, a landy owner, thats a relief, got to strip them down any way as the passenger side is leaking axle oil, as you say the oil seal on the end of the axle must be gone. Amazing how easily you can be miss informed.
Let us know how you get on with the cone washers, and pm me if you want to when you find them.
