  • Anti - Spyware, which is best?

I ran a "free" anti spyware programme on my computer today, and it detected 158 spyware programmes on my computer. It is called Spydoctor by PC Tools. I can't remove them as you have to buy it. I read a review that one guy wrote. He said it destroys McAfee internet security console and privacy killer. I have the McAfee internet security suit on my comp, and don't want it destroyed.

Has anyone got some good ideas on which one to get????

    Cheers

    Andy

Spybot search and destroy its free

I also use no-adaware ( I think I even paid for it). Best to use more than one so you increase your chances of picking stuff up.

Microsoft's anti-spyware is very good, although they have been known to downgrade some items (ie no longer identify they as spyware) when they perceive a business interest in them.

Ad-Aware from www.lavasoftusa.com is excellent, the free or personal version will not however actively prevent infections, but relies on you to run it periodically to clean up any.

Spybot S&D (search and destroy) is also excellent and can be found at www.security.kolla.de (redirects to a safer networking site). This also requires you to run it manually, but offers additional real-time protection against many threats.

Unlike anti-virus software its good practice to use at least 2 anti-spyware programs as none of them are 100% efficient, personally I always use Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D

I read a test recently where they reckoned that even the best anti-spyware is no better than 80% efficient. They said the best bet is a combination of two or three packages (on the basis that what one misses another will pick up) and they picked Microsoft (which is free), PC Tools (which isn't) and a third which I can't remember. I run Microsoft and PC Tools and don't seem to have a problem.

MS Anti-spyware wins hands down. dont be put off because it's M$ though... it used to belong to a company called Giant, and I was using it back then, but M$ realised they couldn't beat it so they bought it instead. typical of Mr Gates but anyhoo.... tis a good prog and will keep your machine clean of nasties if you run it often.

I've always used Ad-aware, recently used Spybot, but after running spybot, then Ad-aware straight after, Ad-aware found more junk that Spybot seemed to miss (or ignored)
