    Damn viruses!!!

4 hours later and I finally finished reinstalling XP again, after some clown decided it would be fun to remotely delete it for me, and got rid of the stupid pic that took over the desktop!!

And didn't loose any important stuff.

what virus protection do you use and firewalls?

        I have

        firewall:
Zone alarm and microsoft (both free and seem good)

        Virus protection:
Mcafee (get it free from work so does not cost me anything either)

I also have spybot, adaware microsoft anti spy ware which get rid of malisous programs.

I also use firefox at home as it seems less people hack it.

I have not had any problems since doing that and all my stuff is free which I like. Hope that helps

Do you find your computer is slow to load up? I had McAfee on mine but found XP was taking about 4-5 minutes to load each time. Got rid of McAfee and now use AVG, a freebee antivirus programme that automatically picks up updates almost every day and has not let me down yet. And my computer now loads up in about 30 secs after I hit my user ID button. Don't get any security problems either.

One suggestion though; don't use Windows firewall and Zone Alarm at the same time as this can cause conflicts. Use Zone Alarm on its own as even the free version is way better than the Windows offering.

Another vote for Zone Alarm and AVG here.

I made the mistake over Christmas of buying the upgrade to Norton Antivirus 2006 - worst piece of software I ever paid money for
Had to re-install Win2000 from scratch to get rid of the problems it caused - worse than a virus! (ie I don't have to pay to get a virus )

Both PC's have firewalls, antivirus, spybot, adaware etc etc etc Mine was fine, Tony has just been visiting some dodgy websites and got unlucky.

AVG actually picked up the virus, it was when it removed it that the PC got sick. Fortunately it didn't need a full rebuild, just windows reinstalling.

Maybe it will get backed up occasionally now :Lindasmilessmuglyashersgetsdo neallthetime:

I dumped Mcafee ages ago...... too big and utterly useless, the only bit I kept was the firewall.
I use AVG freebee......excellent and totally reliable.

I also use WinOptimizer registry cleaner after every session on the net.

Two points that might help people, firstly, I never switch my computer off.... ever. If I install new software or updates where a restart is required then I restart ONLY.
Secondly, I manually check the registry where bugs end up, weekly.
This is how to do it.
Start > run > (type in REGEDIT)> enter

This brings up the registry editor, on the left hand portion of the window you will now see a directory list, follow this route.

                  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > software > microsoft > windows > current version > Run.

Double click the word 'RUN' and a directory will appear in the right hand portion of the window.
This is a list of executable files associated with your programs, if you look through the list you will notice names that are common with familliar programs you have installed.
If you find something that you have no clue what it is, copy it and do a search via google for a description.
This is one of the most common places for 'bugs' to end up as Stormforce can confirm. I talked him through this proceedure and cleared out a trojan manually for him.

                      Anti virus

After being recommended to it i use NOD 32 antivirus and so far its great. Does not slow computer down as some other anti virus programms do.
Can't remember why, but something to do with it working in a different way.
                      Would definately recommend it.

Dont gor around the net unprotected, otherwise you will catch nasty little diseases!

Anyone who thinks they are safe try www.grc.com to see how safe you really are.

I used to use zonealert but dont need it now cos router has a hardware firewall. I use AVG for virus protection which is fab and free. It checks for updates all the time and these come out when need, maybe even daily, not weekly like Norton, which is worse than a virus! Once installed you can never delete it, even upgrading to the latest version of Norton will cause conflicts with the earlier one. Get AVG free from here www.grisoft.com
Parts of your engine go up, stop then go back! Mm!
