  • Tyres again....sorry

Ok, considering the recent events, my wife is now paranoid about the tyres on a new surf. We have just looked at a '96 3rd gen with Bridgestone duellers on it, and reading a few posts on tyres I would wanna change them for a good road tyre (good in wet conditions)

I seem to remember someone mentioning Pirelli Scorpions, or other than that is there a good Michelin???

    thanks for any advice.

This is now a major concern of ours, and will be the first thing changed if we purchase the vehicle.

I looked at the Scorpions but having read the reviews decided against them, I am waiting for some Avon Ranger TSE's at the moment, been quoted £84 each fitted and balanced, they are supposed to be a quality 'road' tyre, obviously I cant comment on them yet but will once they are fitted.

I've got UK spec Bridgestone Dueller HT (road bias tyre) on mine and they are great on the road, just no good off road, good grip in the wet and dry. Mind you mines a second gen and the suspension differences could make a difference so maybe someone with a 3rd gen is better equipped to answer.

        Cheers

If you want a road biased tyre an AT will always be a compromise with worse wet weather performance because they are built to move large amounts of mud and also cut into the soft stuff. A road biased tyre will actually have more rubber on the road at any given time because of the difference in tread pattern.

Mine had Yokahama Geolanders AT on it when I got it and they were bl**y awfull on wet tarmac even though they are reasonably well rated off road.

As an aside my spare is a bridgestone desert dueller and it is significantly worse than the HTs. However I used to run Desert Duellers on a Jeep Cherokee 4 litre when living in the middle east and they were great. I think it depends on the makeup of the road surface as well as the average temperature etc etc.

I would certainly say that if you are going to take the truck off road don't get the duellers or get another set of tyres cos they are pathetic.

            Cheers

After much reading, I went for Michelin 4x4 Synchrones. They are excellent in the wet. I read some bad reports on the Bridgestones. I paid £99 each for the Michellins. Dont let dealers fob you off with a crap tyre because they want to sell you what they have in stock, or something they've got cheap.

BFG MT's loverly jubbly, had them on a few weeks now previously BFG AT's. Can't tell any difference on road performance, would go as far as to say I think the MT's are slightly better in the wet and awesome off road.
