  • 692 quid service

    Well,
I got my truck back. seems fine. All new hose clips, new waterpump, new cam belt, full service including grease on nipples even door locks and hinges. wheels have all been off and have copper slip on the hubs it has new filters and feels generally "tighter" on the road.

It cost 692 which was a shock as the garage owner is a mate of a mate but he says he rounded labour down to 10 hours from 12.

To be fair, they don't do surfs. this was the first and the job so far seems good.

Should I be happy with this price?

I used to have a surf me!

Damn, I need to up my prices!!!! I'm only £250 (ATM...) for a full major service inc all oils and filters

Nice to see someone doing the little things though, every truck I get in for service gets the door hinges and latches greased and the rear window lubed, it always bugged me that most garages skip the finishing touches like that.

Its sad when your suprised to see things greased, ball joints greased and wheels removed, how else are you sposed to check the brakes properly? The garage in the village does 2 or 3 'full services' a day, no way you can do that and cover everything properly.

I had a full service when i bought my surf including cam belt and a few pipes etc. Mine came to £1000 with 10 hrs labour and they do specialise in surfs. I was probably ripped off but for the peace of mind it was worth it.

Im off on a european tour in mine in the summer and will need a full service/check and Air con fixed. If anyone is interested in earning some cash let me know

You'd best clear out your PM box Tony, somehow I sense it's gonna be full tonight!

                Hello!!! Though everybody knew!

I'd just make sure all the fluids are new, everything you can grease is greased, the brakes have plenty of meat left on them, and cross your fingers....

Jeez a grand for a service, for that they should be re-conditioning the engine as well. Think for a decent service Tony's price is good (shame he's so far away) but you just need to find someone who can do a "proper" service rather than a token gesture which has happened to me pretty much every time. If i'd had a good experience with servicing then i probably wouldn't do it myself.
                  Cheers

                  Simon

Wish we had a Tony and Linda In Ilkley M8

I think your price could stand a bit of a tweak if us northeners can shell out the best part of 700 bullets

                        Absolutly!

To be honest, I have very few overheads, working out of the garage, but if thinks take off like we hope, I'm gonna need a a proper workshop and other paraphinalia that will need to be taken into account.

So, till then, make the most of it folks!!!

                          Re

                          I had the same problem!

The chump tried to charge me for 10 hours labour which was utter ****!

I basically told him that services are an agreed price and it isn't my fault if they cannot do a service in descent time, I mean, what does that tell you about a garage when they take 10 ****** hours to do a service!!!!

                          Tony's price is very fair!

The trouble is when you take it to a non-surf experienced garage they usually spend a lot of time arsing around trying to find ways of doing things like changing belts etc. the easy way!

The guy that done mine took ****** ages getting the radiator cowling off because he hadn't the wit to remove the batteries and top hose, and was trying to make life easy for himself!

The paint was scratched, the A Bars were scratched, they said that the ball joints were not greased because there were no grease nipples! the diff oil wasn't changed, the AT fluid not changed, the PAS fluid was not changed, the rubber on the cam belt cover was 1/2 in 1/2 out, the front brakes were not checked, the studs on the viscous fan were rung so badly the fan came off 2 of them on the way home!!!

So all in all, the service was only 1/2 done!

                          I was literally furious!

                          COST £390.00 + £133.00 ferry costs!

                          Bugger that!

                          Never again!

I am going to do ALL servicing and repairs from now on, if I lived near TonyN then he would definately be getting a call but unfortunately for me I don't.

I recommend that anyone who is in the same position try and do the servicing themselves, unless TonyN or some of the other surf mechanics are nearer!

Hey TonyN, I would gladly pay £350.00 for your service mate if you got the MOT sorted as well!

                          Later!

                          Gary

Cool! Isn't you MOT different from over here? I have a guy in the village who does my MOT's, but he's just gone all computerised, and its a pain in the arse now.
