anyone know if there is something similar to the 'devils pit' nearer bristol?

Have a look in most the 4x4 mags there is usually a list somewhere in the back of venues...Or alternativly subscribe to Geen Lane society and join in with your local group off road days.. Also on their website they do havea list of roads that people have one as agren lane so you can create your own route...
