  • Intercooler test fit!

Had a trail fit of my intercooler today, it fits easily, 'cept I can't close the bonnet with it fitted.
Solution 1. Fit two inch body lift so engine will be lower.
Solution 2. fit one of these........http://www.aeroglass.com/scoops/aero.php
Do you think it will be too ostentatious!?
All I'll need to do after that is to fit a parachute and wheelie bars to the back of the truck, wouldn't look too silly..............would it???

what intercooler did you use mate and where abouts have you mounted/plumbed it? better still - any pics?

id have no probs doing a bonnet scoop if it avoided a body lift.
might do one of them anyway though one day....

      how about this one?

It's from a Mazda RX7 . I was thinking of cutting a hole in the bonnet exactly the same size as the intercooler so that it pokes through the bonnet, then fitting a hood scoop to cover it. It sits about two and a half inches above the engine and I don't really want to be fitting a body lift, the intercooler only cost £14.
Of course I could fit the hood scoop directly to the intercooler and just have a hole in the bonnet so when it's shut it looks part of the bonnet, a bit like a shaker hood on the 6.6 litre TransAms.

Hey Vince, i used to work in bodyshop so for what it`s worth i`ll give ya my two penneth worth.
i would definately fit a scoop as they dont look out of place on a 4x4 but i would be very careful how you attatch it to the car. i wouldn`t recommend trying to blend the edges in with filler or fibre glass to create a smooth factory finish look as it will most certainly crack eventually, if not with flex ( and taking a tight bend is enough to cause this let alone offroading) but certainly with the extremes between the heat and cold that the bonnet is going to experience. i know we all see a lot of modified cars that have had this done and ive done a few myself but the owners are reluctant to admit that it only looks great for a maximum of 2 years or so, unless its a complete steel bonnet. they are available as a self adhesive option and they stick great or they can be screwed on very tidily. these can look very good actually and some 4x4`s have scoops that look like an aftermarket jobbie anyway.
hope it helps mate and sorry to bang on.

Cheers Ian, I know about the cracking issues with grp and steel. I used to have an XR4i and I fitted Cosworth bonnet vents and blended then in with filler because they were copies and not genuine Ford vents. Every four months cracks would start to appear around the vents. In the end I used some seam sealer, smoothed it down and painted it. It lasted for ages done this way. For my truck I'm gonna get a bonnet scoop that fixes from under neath but sits on top of the bonnet.

Sounding good my man! I was wonderin how it was coming along, My favourits
list is getting filled up with all these links your posting, This is something i'd love to do and after reading the aussie link the top mounted intercooler was
more efficient than front mounted, I would go for a scoop rather than a lift
kit, For one thing my garage door and another my old woman wouldn't be able to climb in, Hope you do a good "how i did it " in modifications section as
i havn't got the first clue as to which intercooler is suitable and what "plumbing is req etc, Post some pics soon as you can mate, Ian

Up-date...... Made a wooden former today out of a piece of 9"X2" timber to fabricate my own hood scoop out of sheet steel, so that it will fit exactly over the intercooler and I won't loose any airflow around it.
I sprayed it matt black so it wouldn't get 'lost' amongst all the other off-cuts of timber lying around the workshop!

                          I was just thinking that!
Maybe make up a kit comprising scoop, bracketry, hoses and fittings for the Mazda intercooler.

Before you cut your bonnet up there is a guy in Hemel who has a bonnet on his surf with a hole already cut into it and i know he was looking to find a complete bonnet to fill the whole as the intercooler he had was removed...

I think it was surfstar of the top of my head..

Yeah I know, thanks. We've got different colour trucks though and live at opposite ends of the country. Add in the costs of shipping and respraying and he may as well buy a new bonnet.
