Hurray - My puppy has been home for a week now and apart from howling at night everything is brilliant! She's a Spanish Water Dog and is now 8 weeks old.

1. when he howls ignore him, if he continues then...
2. you go downstairs, make a hell of a racket and tell him off, better still really bang the door so he doesn't associate the telling off and being scared with you.
3. do this just the once and do not under any circumstances give him any attention as this only reinforces the fact if he howls then he gets some attention.
a dog will take bad attention over no attention so ignoring the howls is what you'll have to do after the tellin off - eventually they do grow out of it
