  • Is it wrong

If you were to take part in a charity event like the Mac 4x4 would you consider it wrong to get sponsors to give you bits for your car that you don't need for the event but just fancy.

I ask this because i know that some one taking part in the Mac has been given a snorkel for his car in return for putting stickers on his car.

Considering that there is an auction on the sunday night of any items that have been donated I find it very wrong for some one to gain out of a charity event.

    Your thoughts on this please

People will aways find a way for personal gain, at least they're still participating and hopefully raising money.

As long as the supplier is still donating as well as suppling the snorkle I could live with it. Its a iffy moral president though.

easy way out, if you get given something, fit it, then stick it in the auction and 'buy it' for a fair price. no one would expect you to pay full whack, and i doubt anyone doing a charity event will take the mick and buy bits already fitted... that or make a donation in leiu of...
sponsor has put the chap in an invidious position, i think, sponsor wins, driver gets grief, charity gets nowt..
        it's in me shed, mate.

The way I read it the guy has asked for the snorkel in return for sponsorship. If the company has only supplied the snorkle and not giving more to Mac 4x4 its deffo wrong on the guys part.

Its difficult ground; the guy will no doubt be able to say how the charity will benifit by him taking part and therefore how it would be worse off if he didn't.
If the sponsor only requires the stickers to be fitted for the duration of the event it would not be morally correct unless they donate to the event.
I know three guys who organised a charity fundraising trip involving them travelling to Africa and climbing Kilimanjaro. I have been told (but do not know for sure) that they deducted their "expenses" from the sponsor money so in effect bagged a free holiday. Now that's gotta be wrong.

If they are giving him a snorkel in exchange for advertising space and the charity gets nowt from this deal then its wrong.
By him saying that the charity still gains by him participating has sod all to do with this transaction.
If the rules state all donations/items to be auctioned off at the end of the event then he should either hand it in or make a cash donation to the charity of his own to compensate.

Couldn't have said it better. At the end of the day it depends whether the guy has a conscience or not.

I would like to point out that the snorkel is not required for the event as all roadworthy unmodified vehicles can be used .

If someone was to give me a snorkel I would think them very charitable, however I think the guy should donate at least the trade price of the gift.If he dont then he is just a tight git.

I'd be wary of infringing charity law with this. If a person, unconnected to the charity, is benefitting from a charitable event (as this person seems to be) they may be contravening regulations, and may cause the charity to pay additional tax or VAT on the event (i.e raising funds not for charity). Care should also be taken with regard to Macmillan, as their name could be dragged through the mud (so to speak).

There's a useful website from the UK Charity Commission, but may require some careful decoding.

On a personal note, I also think the snorkeller should donate the value of the snorkel to the charity. Seems the right thing to do. After all, the sponsorship money/goods should go directly to the charity. That's the whole point of charity events.

As a regular volunteer at a local charity (every weekend for the last 4 or 5 years) I don't think that charity work allows you to justify for accepting personal donations (cash or otherwise) rather than the charity.

Some of my work involved driving from Oxford to Essex to S****horp to Leicester. I didn't get any fuel/servicing from the charity or anyone else, and I didn't expect it.

I volunteer to help the charity, not to get anything for myself.

If the person concerned would like to voice their own case, I'm sure everyone here would welcome their view and allow them to put forward their case.
