  • Mobile mechanic in Oxfordshire.

I have the contact number of a mobile mechanic, who is a Toyota specialist working from Oxford. I got it off my mate who works at Inchcape Toyota Oxford. He told me this guy worked at Inchcape Toyota for about 13 years until a few months ago, then he left and started out on his own. He is familiar with the whole Toyota range, and comes highly recommended.

My mate called him on my behalf, for a quote to change my timing belt and check my valve clearance. He quoted £100, which I think is a very good price, considering Toyota quoted me over £500, and the bonus is that he comes to you to do the job. The belt and hydraulic tensioner will cost me £60 inc vat from Toyota. The belt was "changed" from the dealer I got my truck from, but I want to change it anyway, buying genuine parts, then I know it has definitely been done.

I do all the other work myself, but prefer to get my timing belts changed at a main dealer. But considering this guy is a 13 year main dealer mechanic, I have decided to let him do the job. I will be calling him in the next day or two to book him up. He has all the Toyota specialist tools etc, and can run diagnostics too.

So if there are any other Oxfordshire based Surf owners that want his number, I will be glad to provide it. But I will wait until he has done my job, so I know what he is like, and to see if by getting him extra work, he will give a good discount. If you can message in this thread if you are interested, then when I call him I can give him an idea of what sort of work I can get him for the discount etc.

I hope you don't mind TonyN? But it's always handy to know a good fitter that is local, and mobile at that?

    Cheers

    Andy

Not a problem. My mate wouldn't have recommended him unless he is good. I will ask him when I call him how far he will travel to do any work.

Its a free country, This place isn't my personal customer network!

I've been mobile near Oxford before. Was lots of head scratching a DaveD's place.

Hey Andy, would appreciate that number. Always handy to have. (Sorry, must have missed this post before now!)

Either PM me or email moc.liamg@onaivek (reverse the letters, avoids spambots this way).

              Cheers mate,

That number would be handy to have as a back up as my truck is my daily driver.

Tony will always be my first call (though touch wood, recent jobs have been minor and easily sorted) .....he came up here gave my truck a good going over, got soaked in the wettest day since records began, confirmed what I had been telling garages for ages, and charged me a ridicullusly small amount of money for the service received.

The Inchcape Toyota Mob at Kidlington are worthy of a mention too. The guys in Spares Dept are cheery helpful and actually grin (and make oooooh sounds)when you mention a Surf.

Hi, I appreciate that this is quite an old post, but does anyone know if this guy is still fixing Toyota's? I have now sadly sold my KZN130 (most reliable & trustworthy vehicle I have ever owned) and purchased a 2001 Land cruiser 4.7 V8 (which is sadly giving me some grief when I try to start it) I am looking for a reliable trustworthy mechanic in or around the Oxfordshire area. If anyone could let me have this guys number, or point me in the direction of someone who is good with Toyota's I would be very grateful. Regards, Shep,

I know a bit about the 2UZ-FE engine, what problems are you having with it?

Erm, 2001 model, 97K miles, fitted with OMVL Dream LPG system. Starts OK when engine left overnight. starts OK when engine is hot. Problem manifests itself when vehicle has been on a run and then left for a couple of hours to cool down. Doesn't seem to make any difference if the vehicle is trying to start on petrol or LPG (depending on how long it has been cooling down) Problem seems to be getting a lot worse as the winter sets in and the temperature drops below freezing. Have to crank the engine over for a long while (whilst giving a little gas (or a lot of gas if you don't get it right first time)) and have to try and hold the revs up for around 10-15 seconds on the gas pedal otherwise vehicle will stall (and then even harder to start) Observations - when the outside temperature drops into the minus degrees the starting issues seem a lot worse + I can notice a definite change on the switch over from Petrol to LPG below 0 deg which I am unable to detect when it is warmer outside (feels like the vehicle is trying to stall but overvidden by the vehicle momentum - (feels like the vehicle is trying to stall at speed) Also, the tickover seems to be very low when the engine is warm (400 RPM according to the dial) which can feel very lumpy on occasions. Sometimes when I start the engine, the rev needle rises up, and then drops down extremely low (and there must be some kind of anti stall device that kicks in because the rev nedle "bounces back up again" and the vehicle will be alright after that. If I can hold the engine revs above 1000 PRM for 10-15 seconds I can usually get away with it. I think that just about covers all the symptoms - I really hope that someone can help? Regards, Paul,

I would say is a duff sensor somewhere, either the ECT (engine coolant temp sensor) or possibly one or more of the O2 sensors.
Does the engine check light come on at all?

As yours is a 2001 engine it'll will be OBD II compliant, so get yourself one of these........
                            http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Any-Car-En...item19d45ff1a3

See if you get any codes and you can also check for live data i.e. coolant temp - air/fuel ratio - fuel pressure etc.

A code reader is a good investment and will tell you a lot more things than you can feel/see/hear.
A garage will charge around £50 just to plug in their scanner and thats before buying any parts.

Things I would check (easiest and simplest) in the meantime would the condition of the Air Flow Meter ( the part between the air filter housing and the black plastic intake tube) and the charcoal cannister and it's connections.

Thanks for the advice, I think I'll start as you suggest with a code reader and see what that shows up. everyone that I have spoken to so far has mentioned oxygen sensors (apparently there are 4 on this engine) & temperaure sensors. your the fist person to mention the air flow meter. I'll let you know what the final outcome is if I ever get to the bottom of it, Regards, Shep,

Forgot to mention, No engine light are coming on.
