So my shopping list consists of a long extension cable to protect my badge, and a couple of dogs.

I can't wait to get another dog. Can't get one until we move house though, as I think it'd be too much for the mutt to put up with. I may stick one of my ferrets in the back for now.

What are ferrets like to keep, do they smell, do they make good pets, how easy are they to look after and how ling do they live?

    I quite fancy a ferret

They make brilliant pets. They're quite time consuming as they're so intelligent, so you need to make time to play with them every day (hardly a chore, as they're so much fun ). They don't smell at all, unless they get scared, when they can let their scent glands off (very rarely happens though). Sometimes boys have a stronger scent in the spring, during mating season, but it's not a bad smell.

Girl ferrets seem more independent and fussy. They moan about things more than boys too. Seriously.

Lifespan is hard to judge, and I've had ferrets for years. It's best to say between 5 and 10 years on average. My oldest ferret was 6 and a half though. A friend of mine had a ferret that lived to 13, so it's really hard to say. All my ferrets are rescues, so we're not really sure of their ages.

Check out the RSPCA Blackberry Farm for rescue ferrets. They often have a few looking for a good home. Though I don't really like the RSPCA, you usually get a healthier ferret than those bought at garden centers (they were healthy enough to escape in the first place!).

I'd also recommend three-legged ferrets...! This is Tres. The happiest ferret you're ever likely to meet.

That's just a Richard Whiteley conspiracy theory. Ferrets don't bite.

              At least mine don't.
