  • Drive Belts

This may be a silly question, but should there be 3 drive belts on a 3.0 TD KZN130 Surf or 2?

With my recent alternator problems, I had the belts changed at the fine people at Halfords (note the subtle hint of sarcasm), and I now only have 2 belts.

There is only 1 belt running around the alternator, but all pictures I have seen in the manual show 2 belts.

The other belt I have deduced runs the aircon.

I'm hoping that Halfords replaced whatever belts they removed, but then you can never really be sure with them.

If I should have 3 belts in total, can anyone give me an idea of sizes?

Any photos (of the belts please!) would also be very much appreciated

    Many Thanks

If the alternator has two pulleys then it should have two belts to turn it. If you have aircon, then yes there is a third belt. Some have removed the aircon, so would then only have two. Not seen any yet with only one belt on the alternator/fan.

Go back to Halfrauds and tell the guy that fitted your belts that he is a fu****g tw*t.

There should be two belts from the crank pully to the alternator pully and one belt from the crank pully to the air con pully.

You can tell because you will now have a drive groove in both the pullys that is devoid of a belt. I got mine from Toyota. They were considerably bigger than the belts that were on it before in width and depth. Always pays to buy the genuine part. Genuine Surf belts are pretty cheap. Mine were no more than £20 all in.

Right, here you go mate. You are lucky, as I've still got my receipt from Toyota for the drive belts. Here are the part numbers you need to order them.

        Y90916 - 02385 N/STK FAN BELT X1 £14.47 each

        Y90916 - 02400 N/STK FAN BELT X1 £12.12 each

You get two belts in the top order (alternator belts) and one in the bottom (aircon).

The prices might be dearer for you, as I get a good discount from my Toyota dealer (coz I'm always spending money up there)

        Hope this helps.

That's what first made me think there was a belt missing. Any idea what size it should be?

The belt that is there is on the front of the two drive grooves.

I suppose the missing second belt is the reason for the unholy screech I get when I first start up from cold?

I haven't got a clue what the size is mate. If you want my advice, call a Toyota dealer and order the belts using the part numbers I gave you. You will then get the proper belts for that Engine. Aftermarket belts are ok, but I had aftermarket belts on my truck when I bought it, and they were longer, with less width and depth than the originals. When I put the originals on, they looked like they were too big for the pulleys. They certainly fit now.

Yes, that's the belt slipping on the pulley. NEVER get Halfrauds to do ANY work on your vehicle. They use spotty teenagers that haven't got a clue, or qualifications. If you can't do the job yourself you must know someone that can do it for you???

They will take two days to come in if they haven't got them in stock. They are easy to fit and you only need a few spanners. If you need help fitting them I can tell you what to do when you come to fitting them. I can put some pictures on here also.

I've just got off the phone to Toyota. I've ordered two new rear shocks for the hard/soft suspension and a new Radiator. Just under £500. OUCH!!

              Drive Belts

Just got off the phone to Halfords, and the guy who re-fitted the belts was absolutely sure there was only one belt on the alternator originally.

He remembers, because he noticed the second groove on the alternator pulley and was surprised that there was only one belt on it.

I've been driving my truck now for 11mths and had no problems other than the alternator not charging the batteries last month. When the belts were changed, the alternator was working fine again.

Do you think I am going to cause major problems having only one belt? What isn't working as a result of having only the one belt (on the front groove of the alternator pulley)?

I can see you all running outside to check how many belts you've got !!!

Photos showing how to fit the belts would be really, really helpful as I'm going to have a crack at it myself rather than let Halfords loose on it again.

This guy is a knob. Why, if he thought it was odd, didn't he tell you that you were missing a belt, and would need two?

You won't do any harm using one belt. But the tension will now be uneven on the pulley bearings, as all the tension is on one side of the pulley, and not on the whole of it. The way I look at it. If it's designed to run with two belts, then two belts it should have on it!!

I gave you the part numbers, the rest is up too you!!

Two belts are needed because they have to drive the Water Pump and Alternator with the Vac pump attached which is a fair load. Two belts also act as a safety feature. If one breaks then you still have one so you do not loose drive to the Water Pump (overheating) and Alternator/Vacuum pump (flat batteries and vacuum loss). Always use two matching belts. If you use two different brands the size may differ and proper tension on both cannot be achieved.

Taking Matter Into My Own Hands

Thanks to everyone for your advice.

Having taken the truck back to Halfords and showing them a picture of the drive belts from the manual, showing them where the missing belt should go, telling them that the belt is exactly the same as the one they have already ordered once, and giving them the Toyota parts number . . . .

they need to have the car in again to look at it and work out what is required !!

I refer you to the following thread: Halfords are vvankers

I have now contacted a little local 4x4 specialist who knew exactly what I needed, and will have one in stock today. All I need to do is fit it.

                    Thanks again everyone.

I suggest you order a brain scan on the staff there. I bet nothing is there.
