My 'pooter has stopped waking up after going into standby/sleep mode, unless I reboot it. I have had to resort to switching off the power save settings. What can I do to save the planet? All those extra carbon emissions are keeping me awake!!!

The 'wont awaken after being put to sleep' problem maybe sorted if you are running XP and have an OE version of XP on a disc (not the puter makers version, microsofts original). It is possible to use the OE disc to 'repair' a sector.Who needs speed, People will always wait for me !

Not sure but have you downloaded any Windows updates lately. Mines been playing up recently as it's deciding not to load up Windows on start up. Only happens occasionally. However, my work computer did the same this morning. Our IT guys had a look at it but couldn't find anything, not even any error log. Could be a recent Windows Update is not behaving exactly as they expect. Don't think it can be a virus or trojan as the works security is almost as good as Fort Knox.Mike G

I do run Norton System Works premier with all the bells and whistles and keep it right up to date with the latest virus definitions, however My son uses a program called Panda and swears by it - anyway we did a Panda check (free on their web site) and it identified a trojan that had not been picked up by Norton, this was about a month ago - cleaned the system using Panda, so I ordered one off fleebay, as yet I havn't installed it but as I did a clean up with panda I am now on their mail list - got an offer to do a check on the system..free - so scanned the system....you guessed it, another trojan same root name different varient, again not picked up by Norton
You can guess just how impressed I am with Norton!!
The Panda gets loaded tonight..Norton can go F**K themselves and will be told so!! I can only reccommend you all go this way, my puter went slow...now OK as the check costs you nought, what you got to loose??????????????????Did I mention I have a BLUE one

Re
Hi All,
I suppose I had better own up to being a computer nerd then to help you all out.
I know all there is to know regarding hardware, software and other PC related stuff.
I run my own PC Repair & Maintenance business and have been in the game for about 13 years.
If anyone has any problems let me know and I will try to help out.
Also, if anyone needs advice on purchasing or upgrading etc. just ask!
A LOT of "so called" Anti Virus and Anti Spyware software will give false readings to "encourage" the trial users to buy the full product.
There are "few" that are legit and if you search Google you will find many articles on the offenders.
The BEST free Anti Spyware software is Ad Aware and the free version can be found here:-
Code:http://downloads.pcworld.com/pub/new/privacy___security/anti_spyware_tools/aawsepersonal.exe
I recommend AVG Antivirus for keeping viruses at bay and this can be sent from me if anyone wants it.
If a PC starts slowing badly down there is nothing that will fix it other than a complete reformat and reinstallation of the OS.
NO amount of "wonder" cures and rubbish "cure all" software will fix it.
I have seen systems TOTALLY infected with 100's of instances of spyware and malicious software and the owners were blissfully unaware apart from noticing a severe slowdown.
Generally a well used PC should be reformatted and have the OS reinstalled every 12 months.
Windows is very buggy and as your PC is used it starts to deteriorate and can stop functioning effectively.
Norton is generally quite good but it is a very "invasive" piece of software that takes up a lot of your resources and can slow your system down very badly!
McAfee is even more invasive.
If you are using Microsoft Windows XP make sure you have Service Pack 2 installed as it has a built in firewall.
BTW, ANY security software is utterly useless unless it is UPDATED very often!
Later!
Gary

I use AVG full edition now - used to have Norton and had so many problems with viruses I binned it and got AVG, since then no probs. I also use ZoneAlarm Pro for a Firewall and anti spyware - since installing no problems whatsoever..
As regards go slow - I agree with Gary - reformat and reinstall every year.
da SLUG man - if I remember correctly a recovery disk should be able to take the system back to it's original state which includes a reformat - if not, and you have a valid win XP serial number, I will send you a copy of Win XP pro....PM me and I'll sort it out..
