brake fluid?

ive been through the seach facility to find out what brakefluid to put in my 3rd gen and found two posts, one saying use dot 3 and one saying use dot 4?
any ideas which is the correct one. also what grade engine oil do i use

I've been using Dot 4 brake fluid, and 15W40 semi-synthetic engine oil.
Everythings been o.k.

A label on the brake reservoir of my 1997 3rd Gen says Dot 3. So as that is what has obviously been used by the previous Japanese owner, that's what I've stuck to.
On the Dot 4 bottle it says that it is compatible with Dot 3 as well - so you pays your money and takes your choice!!
As for engine oil, I always use Magnatec GTD.
