I reckon that using a mobile phone with a hands-free installation is like anything else driving related. It's a matter of experience. I only drew the comparison with my ham radio activities because I have been driving around chatting, for many years, either locally through one of the many amateur repeaters or using the HF (shortwave) to talk to New Zealand or Oz, in the early morning or late evening.
I find that I can be driving on, "auto pilot," but as soon as something happens on the road, that demands my full concentration, I completely forget the radio/mobile phone/ECT/Sunroof/Electric rear window/ Terry Wogan and deal with whats happening on the road. (Ask anyone who was on the North London Net the night a cast iron bath fell off a skip lorry right in front of me..........boy did I have a red face!! I completely forgot I was transmitting and let loose a string of expletives. The Hoddesden Radio Club was treated to a graphic description of what I thought of the no-brain driving the lorry.)
Oh well, thats enough waffle on this subject for now.
BTW. I started smoking rollups to cut down, because you cant roll em at 70MPH on the motorway.........Oh yes you can and with filters.
