If it's the bolt I'm thinking about- it shouldn't just 'fall out' there ought to have been a locking nut on it.....?

nah mate.. not fallen out... sheared! its the long one (about 6") that is used to adjust the alternator to tension the belts - (Not the one that goes into the alternator)

Its not the poor trucks fault that someone overtightened it!

I've got the nut and bolt from non-EFI trucks, but not the single bolt (no lock nut) for the later trucks. You'll get one from Toyota.

Joe, I sympathise with you BIG TIME, Iknow what it is like to owna vehicle that just becomes a bottomless pit for cash. My tricked up Rangey owed me £4500 by the time I decided enough was enough.
Thing is though, like others have said, your next vehicle maybe worse and cost you even more.

It is not realy fair to ask us to convince you to keep your Surf, as you may have gathered the bulk of us are happy with our ones, and are rather bias.
Lets say that we do manage to convince you, you would hate us each time you had to spend more money on your toy.

Sadly its a chance you take when you buy an import, you know nothing about the history, previous owner, or maintainance provenance. Some of us are lucky and some not. Ultimately its a big complex old car that lived on the other side of the world for most of its life, most are over ten years old, and I dare say most have issues. If there is anyone here that expected their Surf to be totaly trouble free as a ten year old, sorry they were deluded.

If you keep the Surf I wish you the best of luck with it, If you dont I wish you the best of luck with whatever you purchase.

              All the best,

I'd expand that a bit to 'sadly it's a chance you take buying ANY CAR'

Been talking to a guy a today with an 04 Discovery V8- he's on his forth engine and is understandably totally p*ssed off with Land Rover. The car has been in the garage 23 weeks so far this year and he wants his money back. I sympathise more with him and his problems than the minor faults a 15 year old 4x4 might have!

A well thought out and well put response. I lost all faith in mine and got rid at the end of september after 3 1/2 years ownership. You make your choice and live with it.

If it makes you feel any better, I used to own a Fu**terea the poxy car cost me over a grand in the first two months to keep on the road.
Then I was enlightened, I became the owner of a K reg Surf.
I cant say its all been fun.
                            2 Tyres slashed £160
                            Head went £1200
                            MOT £450
                            MPG 21 and falling
                            Car wrote off by TESCO!!!
back on the road and still going strong.
I have put a lot of money into it and I have to say
                            I AM GLAD!
It is the best 15 year old car I have ever seen.
My only regret is, I wish I knew they did a 3L when I brought it!

be one with the Surf, and like it, you will still be going strong in another 15 years. Maybe with a limp, but hay, life is full of tests.
Back in the world of Surfdom

                              Hmmmm

Well Read all your responses... I have to say i cant argue with any of them!

Managed to get the surf home last night with NO PROBLEMS!!!

As the alternator had slipped - therefore loosening all the belts the fan wasn't spinning at all. I was expecting to overheat (or get very close) atleast every couple of miles! IT DIDN'T !!!!! Made it 31 miles home, through country lanes without the heat needle going over 3/4 of the way once!!! I was amazed!! .. That must prove the effectivness of bonnet vents!

The surf is trying to tell me something!

So... I have decided.... The reason I WAS going to sell it was cost.. here's the solution... New bolt to fix yesterdays nearly break down £2.09+VAT from toyota! Can't argue with that.

Fuel economy - Heated fuel cat from TonyN (please email me with prices mate for a complete kit.. in other words everything I'm likely to need!) and run on near 100% veg oil - i recon £15 per tank full - cheaper than the mrs's honda jizz.

So thats it... i'm decided.. Its STAYING!!!!! I would miss it imensly (spelt wrong) - even the thought of driving a golf instaed gives me this deflated.. empty feeling!!!
