For what it's worth
I personally prefer front wheel drive, even if both wheels are spinning at least the 'drive' is always in the direction that you want to travel.
With rear wheel drive and a 2 ton truck it doesn't take much in the way of inertia to drag the vehicle off line.
With 4 wheel drive, even if the traction is broken due to the diffs, I would reckon on there being slightly more chance of getting a slide back under control.
All of which is academic down here in sub-tropical Bristol of course!
