  • Ice?.....what ice?

Driving to work this morning the roads were like a sheet of glass.I tried 2wd to start with on a very windy road.........scary,then I hit the 4wd button, needless to say I got to work in 1 piece. The Surf didn't move an inch when cornering, climbing or descending steep hills (but the fuel gauge did!),a pleasure to drive on slippy roads. This winter is gonna be so much fun!

      As they used to say...........

      There's an old Seattle saying:.............

'Four wheel drive does not necessarily mean four wheel grip!'

      Still need to take care...................

Very, very true. Take care on that windy road, you can still slip with 4wd.

Allright until you try and stop. 4WD is great for forward but doesnt help the brakes.
If life's an uphill struggle then downhill from now on can't be that bad?!

Yes it does, stomp on the brakes, snick it into reverse and gas it to stop forward motion!

                Challenging but entertaining!

(best practiced in an empty carpark though )

Nope not to the Pit. Andy posted earlier about Thames Valley 4x4 having a meet just up the road from me - so I'm gonna go and check it out.

                              Ice Driving

                              Just a quick thought:

Knowing how the 4WD system works on a 2nd gen Surf, ie no differential between the front and rear. And knowing that a slipping wheel has less grip than a non-slippy wheel. During a turn on ice, would you be forcing one (or maybe both) front wheels to slip - and hence reduce the steering force? Would it be better to drive in 2WD mode when cornering on ice??

                              Rob.
