i was thinking of that, a double sided water proof type one.
vince are your roof bars off an estate car just bolted on, as i was considering something along the lines of an astra van/estate bars from a s****py and bolting them on from the inside.

No, I used a good de-greasing solution and 'blu tac'

hehehe sorry. Yes mine are bolted through from in inside. I measured about five times before taking a drill to the roof though
The bars had rubber gaskets but I squirted a ring of silicone aroud each hole as well, and I used 40mm ally washers in side with spring washers on top of them. The bars are really secure 'cos I can use them to haul myself up to polish the roof.
Oh and they're from a Peugeot 406 estate, Escort bars are the same too.

i now how that feels i used to install handsfree car kits into cars, and when i did the roof mounted aerials on merc's i would measure them at least half a dozen times, i once drilled into the box section on a pug estate roof that was fun getting out of that one, i had to get a body shop guy to cut a big hole in the box section, the car was brand new it didn't even have a reg plate on it. several pant changes were needed before i owned up to what i had done........

That's why I measured a few times, 'cos my truck has a sunroof and there are what seem to be extra strengthening struts on the inside of the roof.
