  • New guy.

Hi all, just joined up and want to say congrats on the website and hope everything works out OK with your Mum Dave, I know I'm new but I read the forums tonight before logging on and what's happened is not right.
I've had my '92 surf for about a year now but the inevitable has happened. The head went. To make things worse me and the missus were towing our caravan at the time! And to top it all off, it went at the beginning of our honeymoon in September, in the middle of nowhere North of Glasgow!! The only garage around had a look at it and proclaimed it knackered so has been trailered down south where it is awaiting a new engine. Needless to say I'm a bit miffed cause I am using a clapped out escort for the moment.
Does anyone know how easy it is to fit an engine ?
Any information would be handy, thanks

Why do you want a new engine?
The head department will cost between £1000 and £1500
Mine was done by Stevo, cost around £1200 with the other bits I had done.
And once they are done, they will keep on going!
Try a search on heads, but only do it on this site, you never know what you will end up with if you use google!

I've been looking at prices of new heads and the extras to go with them and the best one Ive had is £450 with free delivery from london with 3 month guarantee. The cost of labour for fitting is around the £400 mark according to the garages here plus the fact they would have to rebuild nearly the entire engine bay due to an over-enthusiastic mechanic in Scotland and sort the timing because a bolt wasn't put through the cog, and it would have to be transported to the garage since no one I know has a trailer wide enough!
A new engine is around the £700 mark with 12 month guarantee with only 41000 miles on the clock and my neighbour swaps his landrover engines quite often. He fits it, I pass him the wrench every so often and we both drink beer.
Either way I dont have the dosh yet so still looking into it.
If I can find Steve's number I'll give him a try.

Our head lasted 1 whole week after we bought the surf!!
Him indoors has just bought another head, it cost him £800 so far. He has done all the work himself and so far so good. I cant wait for him to get it back on the road so we dont have to use his convertable...I hate it!!!

Yeah its all sorted now, well apart from the heater matrix.....and the guy who ripped us off!!!
The surf is in bits again because Bob has pulled all the dash to pieces to get to the heater and wants to fit a new radio and an MPH dial.
