I have discovered that there are two types of 4WD supplied on Surfs, the standard, and the Multi Mode which I've got. Although it says that it's less economical, it doesn't say for use on loose surfaces only. Is this because it has a central diff or what? It also has the option of auto A/C which seems to work very well.

yup, you can use 4wd on the road, as you have a center diff, giving permenant 4wd for road use. just don't use the diff lock. there was a post on here a while back about all the multi mode options. but bascily you'll have 2wd or 4wd (no diff lock) for road use, and 4wd diff locked, hi or low ratio for wheelin'
For economy and wear issues, I'd leave 4wd alone unless its really wet or slippy.
