Yep , had arc eye and burnt arms . I usually lay a wet flannel over my eyes and that eases the pain . Make sure you are not driving or operating machinery when doing that .

Nasty Had It Twice Now.yes I Know I Didnt Learn The First Time, but Then Who Does.nothing Like Waking Up In The Middle Of The Night Feling Like Some One Has Just Thrown A Load Of Sand In Your Eyes.i Found That Placing Your Face Under Cold Water Helps.
After I had a dose of arc eye I went and bought one of those welding face shields with the automatically darkening lens. Its clear until you strike the arc, then darkens in a milli-second.
They aren't cheap, but a damn sight cheaper than a new pair of peepers!!

I got one of those. They're great until you use them in near darkness (needed to finish the job) and forget they're solar powered. Man that was bright

they are also available with tiny lithium bateries mine have lasted over 2 years so far - i have spares just in case -you never know!
But best thing since sliced bread, but even with the auto shield I have still struck an arc forgetting to drop the shield that is on me ed. how crazy is that!
Still hope the sAND COMES OUT YOUR EYES SOON MATE i CAN FEEL FOR YOU AS HAVE BEEN THERE TOO MANY TIMES no I'm not shouting I just hit the caps lock by mistake and can't be bothered to re type it all - Sorry - (but i supose it could be easyer to read!) I have been told and it does appear to be the case that if you wear glasses (i do) the risk of damage is less. I have found that since wearing them when I cop an eyefull it is not so bad as before I wore specs
My auto shield cost me £85.00, I have to change the lens cover now and then because of spatter and scratches but would not be without one now.
By the way optrex kept in the fridge works wonders
Take care Tony where would we be without you!
The other one
Ouch! That hurts. Feel for you mate. Optrex and an old fashioned eye bath helps. A lie down with a couple of used (cold) tea bags on your eyelids is very soothing.

I got a cheapish one, works really well & it was £35ish I think (B/day pressie). Seems to work well, I wouldn't have thought they needed sunlight to work, striking the arc produces sackloads of UV light, hence sunburn & arc eye. Still I had a hot spark go down my earhole on Sunday, not THAT HURT!!!
Parts of your engine go up, stop then go back! Mm!

Been looking at these, but didn't know if they were any good, the field of view seems a little small, but its a big jump in price to the more 'reputable' ones. Maybe I'll get one anyway it's much in the big scheme of things.
'Snap on' were doing a special offer a month back on self darkening full face masks at £130 ish . I wanted one , but I dont do as much welding these days .
